Seven Years Of Rain Stopped The Day I Signed The Consent Chapter 04

Early the next morning, Mrs. Whitmore sat in the center of the living room, her face grim.

“Evelyn, look how upset you’ve made Chloe. You’re her sister-in-law. Is it really so hard to swallow your pride and say something nice first?”

“Chloe grew up without a mother to love her. What’s wrong with Adrian looking after her a little more?”

“You’re a grown woman. You’re perfectly capable of taking care of yourself. It’s not like you can’t survive without a man.”

Adrian stood by the window, looking exhausted. He made a token attempt to stop her.

“Mom, enough. That’s enough.”

“Am I wrong?”

Mrs. Whitmore raised her voice.

“You’ve been married for seven years, and there still hasn’t been the slightest sign of a baby. Yet you spend all day wearing that sour face around the house.”

“Either go to the hospital and find out what’s wrong with you, or stop taking up the place beside Adrian and wasting his time.”

“Men his age already have kids in elementary school.”

Chloe’s eyes were red as she thoughtfully handed Mrs. Whitmore a glass of water.

“Mrs. Whitmore, please don’t get too upset with Evelyn. She must feel terrible too, being in poor health and unable to get pregnant.”

“Someday, even after I get married and have children of my own, I wouldn’t mind letting my child call Evelyn godmother. At least the Whitmore family would still have a child to carry on the name.”

I looked at the three of them, each playing their part, and suddenly found the whole scene absurd beyond words.

The heir they kept demanding from me had already died in the storm two days ago, crushed under the entitlement of these very three people.

I lifted my eyes to Adrian.

“If I really couldn’t have children, would you also think I should step aside?”

Impatience flickered through Adrian’s eyes.

“What are you twisting this into now? Chloe was trying to give you a way out, but you insist on bristling at everyone.”

“Can’t you just say something softer to Mom for once?”

I let out a cold laugh.

Mrs. Whitmore shot to her feet, furious.

“Adrian, listen to that attitude. She can’t have children, and now we’re not even allowed to say it?”

“What, are you the victim now? If you really can’t give this family a child, then get divorced sooner rather than later. Whether the Whitmore line ends is not up to you.”

“Mom!”

Adrian cut her off with a frown.

“Evelyn Hart, you’ve been completely unreasonable lately.”

“Fine. Since you clearly have no intention of communicating like an adult, stay home by yourself and think about what you’ve done.”

He snatched up his car keys, then turned to Chloe.

“Chloe, pack your things. Tonight, you’re going back to the family home with my mother. There’s no reason for you to stay here and be mistreated.”

Chloe nodded obediently. Before she left, she gave me one last wounded look.

Adrian opened the door and escorted his mother and his so-called little sister out.

At the entryway, he paused and said coldly without turning around.

“Think carefully about what you did wrong. I’ll come back tomorrow, and I hope you’ll be normal by then.”

I watched his back and said softly, “Goodbye, Adrian.”

Adrian only thought I was throwing another tantrum. He shut the door without looking back.

The lock clicked into place.

I raised my eyes to the window. The rain was still falling.

After seven years, the storm inside me was finally over

At eight that night, the plane finally landed after a turbulent flight. A dragging pain throbbed low in my abdomen.

I swallowed a painkiller, straightened my back, and walked into the arrivals hall.

“Ms. Hart! Over here!”

At the exit, several men in field jackets hurried toward me, visibly relieved, and took my luggage.

“You’re finally here. Mr. Lawson is waiting for you at the base. The project still has a chance now.”

“Take me straight to the site. I need the latest design plans.”

Just as I was about to step out of the airport, my phone began vibrating wildly in my pocket.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The same name kept flashing red across my screen.

I tapped Decline, then powered the phone off completely.
