Seven Years Of Rain Stopped The Day I Signed The Consent Chapter 06

On that stormy night, Adrian rushed into the hospital like a man out of his mind.

The OB-GYN department had long since closed for the day, so he ran to the ER nurses’ station and grabbed a nurse by the arm.

“Look up a patient for me. Evelyn Hart. Did she have a D&C here two days ago?”

The nurse was startled and pulled free of his grip.

“Sir, calm down. We can’t release patient information like that.”

With red eyes, Adrian shoved his ID and a photo of their marriage certificate onto the counter.

“I’m her husband.”

The nurse checked the system. When she looked back at him, there was clear contempt in her eyes.

“Yes. She was brought in at three in the afternoon two days ago. She fell outside during the storm, had severe bleeding, and the baby couldn’t be saved.”

Adrian’s whole body jolted.

“Where did she fall?”

“How would we know that? When she came in, her dress was soaked through and covered in blood. We asked her to call her emergency contact to sign the paperwork, and she said no one was coming, so she signed it herself.”

Every word cut into Adrian like a blade. He staggered back two steps.

Three in the afternoon, two days ago.

What had he been doing at that exact moment?

He had been driving Chloe to the beach. He had thought my calls were disturbing Chloe’s emotional state, so he hung up and set his phone to auto-reply.

He had even posted that caption online: [Storms are scary. Good thing she’s got me.]

While he was protecting another woman, his wife had been lying on an operating table, losing their child.

Adrian leaned against the hospital wall, gasping for air.

His phone kept vibrating. Chloe’s calls came in one after another.

He answered.

“Adrian! Where did you go? The thunder is so loud outside. My heart rate is back up to one-twenty, and I can’t breathe…”

“Chloe.”

Adrian’s voice was painfully hoarse.

“Two days ago, when you insisted on going to the beach, Evelyn called me three times.”

The other end went quiet for a second.

“Adrian, why are you suddenly bringing that up? Didn’t Evelyn say it was just a small procedure?”

“She miscarried!”

Adrian suddenly roared into the phone.

Everyone in the hallway turned to look.

“While you were crying about thunder and insisting that I take you to the beach, she fell in the rain and lost the baby.”

Chloe was so frightened she started stammering.

“I… I didn’t know, Adrian. Evelyn never said she was pregnant. If I’d known, I never would have asked you to be with me…”

“Enough.”

Adrian hung up.

Then he ran into the rain and drove to my parents’ house.

For the entire three-hour drive, he kept his foot heavy on the gas.

At two in the morning, he knocked on my parents’ door. My mother opened it.

The moment she saw Adrian standing there soaked from head to toe, her face turned cold.

“What are you doing here?”

“Mom, where’s Evelyn? Let me see her. I need to talk to her.”

Adrian tried to step inside, but my mother shoved him back. Then she grabbed the broom by the door and swung it hard at him.

“Who’s your mom? Do you have any idea how much my daughter suffered in your house?”

Adrian took the hit without dodging.

“Mom, I know I was wrong. I didn’t know she was pregnant. I really didn’t know…”

“You didn’t know? Where were you when she was alone in the hospital having surgery? Where were you when she called you for help in the middle of that storm?”

My mother’s eyes were red as she pointed at him and shouted.

“Adrian Whitmore, I gave you my daughter whole and happy, and this is what you did to her? Get out. Don’t you ever set foot in this house again.”

Adrian dropped to his knees.

“Mom, please. Let me see her just once. I need to apologize to her in person.”

“See her? Evelyn isn’t even here.”

My father came out from inside the house.

“She sent me a message this afternoon. She said there was an important project that needed her to take charge.”

“Adrian, she already left the divorce agreement at home. Let this end cleanly.”

Adrian froze.

She had not come back?

Then where could a woman who had just miscarried and was still physically weak possibly have gone?

He shot to his feet, pulled out his phone, and called his assistant.

“Find out where Evelyn went. Check her flight records. Now.”

Ten minutes later, his assistant called back.

“Mr. Whitmore, your wife flew to New Mexico.”
