Seven Years Of Rain Stopped The Day I Signed The Consent Chapter 03

That night, I was in my room sorting the documents and medication I needed for my flight.

The door flew open, and Adrian stormed in, furious.

When he saw the pill bottles on the table, his voice faltered for half a second.

“Why are you taking so much medicine? What’s wrong with you?”

I swept the medication into my bag and zipped it shut.

“Nothing serious. If you came here to defend her, save it.”

Chloe peeked out from behind him, her eyes red.

“Evelyn, I’m sorry. I only sent that voice message because I wanted Adrian to stop worrying…”

Adrian tossed his car keys onto the table, his face dark.

“She was trying to pass along a message for me, and you replied with, ‘I’m not dead.’ Do you think that was appropriate?”

“Evelyn Hart, you’ve been impossible lately. Don’t you know Chloe has serious trauma?”

“A thunderstorm scared her so badly when she was little that it still triggers her heart. What has she ever taken from you? Why do you have to be so bitter about everything?”

My hands stilled.

I looked up at him, and for the first time, the man in front of me felt so unfamiliar it was almost laughable.

“If I had some guy I called my brother, and he took me to the beach before dawn and draped his jacket over me, would you be okay with that?”

He was silent for two seconds.

“That’s different. You’re not scared of thunder.”

I fell quiet.

But I was.

That day in the storm, thunder cracked right over my head. I sat at the bottom of the steps, blood mixing with rainwater beneath me, shaking so hard I could barely breathe.

I had been terrified too.

But my husband had been busy playing protector for another woman.

“Enough. Stop arguing.”

Adrian tugged at his tie in irritation.

“Chloe can stay in the empty room upstairs tonight.”

“No. That room was for…”

Before I could say nursery, Adrian raised a hand and cut me off.

“Evelyn, I’m telling you, not asking for your permission. I don’t need you to tell me whether it’s okay.”

“I’ve been patient enough with you these past few days. You disappeared for no reason, came back with that attitude, and now you’re acting like everyone owes you something. Can you grow up a little?”

He pointed toward the door.

“Apologize.”

“No.”

“Don’t push me.”

Adrian jabbed a finger toward me, his voice turning colder.

“My mother happens to be coming over tomorrow. If you feel so wronged, you can explain yourself in front of her.”

“Fine. Whatever.”

I stopped looking at him and lowered my head to check my flight information.

Twenty hours until takeoff.

Seeing that, Chloe deliberately glanced at my stomach and forced a small smile.

“Evelyn is so emotional. You’re not pregnant, are you? If you really were, you wouldn’t stop treating me like your little sister, would you?”

The air went still for a moment.

Adrian’s eyes softened at once. He patted Chloe’s shoulder to comfort her.

“She’s not pregnant. And even if she were, you’d always be my sister.”
