Seven Years As His Wife… Until My Own Son Called Me A Homewrecker Chapter 08

Adrian spent the entire next day shopping with Vanessa. By the time she had bought enough designer bags

to equal the price of a house, even he was tired.

He stood by the mall’s floor-to-ceiling windows, turning a lighter over in one hand. A plane crossed the distant sky, and Mia’s face appeared in his mind without warning.

In nearly seven years of marriage, he had never once taken her shopping.

Then again, Mia had never spent his money on luxuries. She wore inexpensive T-shirts and casual pants

from discount stores. The few costly dresses she owned had been birthday gifts his assistant selected for

her.

She ate simply too. When Adrian and Noah were home, she prepared elaborate meals filled with their

favorites. When she was alone, she made pasta or eggs and called it dinner.

She had been just as content at the estate as she had been in that tiny studio.

Mia would settle for anything when it came to herself. She only refused to cut corners for him and Noah.

Her entire life had revolved around them.

The thought made Adrian frown. He opened their message thread, certain a reply would be waiting. Mia had

never left him waiting before.

His expression hardened when he saw his last messages still sitting unanswered.

What was Mia playing at? Did divorce no longer frighten her? Was she really determined to defy him this

time?

His grip tightened around the phone.

“Fine, Mia. If that’s how you want to play it.”

He had indulged her for too long. She had forgotten that without him and the Blackwood name, she had

nothing.

At three fifteen the next afternoon, Adrian arrived at the county court.

He expected to find Mia waiting exactly where he had told her to be. Instead, she was nowhere in sight.

His brows drew together. “She’s late. Find out where she is.”

His assistant returned three minutes later, looking uncomfortable. “Mr. Blackwood, Ms. Bennett hasn’t

checked in.”

Mia was never late. For anything important, she arrived half an hour early.

When had anything involving him stopped being important to her?

Unease stirred in his chest. He reached for his phone, but Vanessa spoke beside him.

“She thinks you can’t divorce her if she refuses to show up. She’s clinging to you any way she can.”

The unease disappeared. Mia had demanded a divorce when she believed he would refuse. Now that he had

agreed, she was too afraid to appear.

Adrian stepped out of the car and strode toward the court, issuing an order to his assistant as he went. “Call

my attorney. Have the final divorce papers filed and send Mia a copy. Tell her she has thirty minutes to get

here.”

Ten minutes later, he sat impatiently in the waiting area, checking his watch.

His assistant hurried toward him, pale and breathless.

“Mr. Blackwood, there’s a problem.”

“The clerk said…said…”

Adrian frowned impatiently. “Said what?”

“Your divorce from Ms. Bennett is already final.” The assistant held out a court-stamped document. “This is a

certified copy of the judgment.”.

Adrian stared at it without moving.
