Separated Rooms for Three Years, He Panicked After I Moved Out Chapter 29

As I walked out of the coffee shop, I heard the scrape of a chair behind me.

He was following me.

“Marceline!”

I didn’t turn around. I just walked faster.

He caught up and stepped in front of me, blocking my path.

“You’re right,” he said, breathless. “I’m not used to losing you. But that’s not the point.”

“The point is, I know now that the stupidest thing I ever did wasn’t marrying you.”

“It was failing to cherish you when I had the chance.”

“Chloe was my first love. I always thought I loved her. But after living with you for three years, I finally understand that the person I love is you.”

“I liked coming home and seeing you in the kitchen. I liked how you organized my closet. I liked the lamp you always left on for me.”

“Chloe can’t do those things. Not because she doesn’t know how, but because she isn’t you.”

I looked at him and felt a sudden, profound exhaustion.

“Briar, have you ever stopped to think what those habits you liked so much actually meant for me?”

He didn’t speak.

“They meant three years of loneliness. Three years of waiting. Three years of me telling myself, over and over, that maybe tomorrow would be different.”

“You just got used to taking. You never once thought about what it meant to give.”

His eyes reddened.

“Marceline, I know I was wrong.”

“If you know you were wrong, then change.”

“But don’t expect me to be there to see it.”
