Revenge Is the Best Wedding Gift Chapter 17

During the following period, because I insisted on rekindling our relationship like we were dating again, we slept in separate rooms.

One afternoon, I washed a big bowl of fresh strawberries and walked to Rafe’s study where he was working, smiling radiantly:

“Rafe, I think I’m starting to remember some things from before.”

Rafe’s hands stopped typing, his expression complex—unsure whether to be happy or panicked.

“I remember you love eating strawberries. Before, you’d text me from the clinic every day asking me to wash strawberries and wait for you to come home.”

This sentence was like a bucket of ice water poured over Rafe from head to toe, freezing all his blood.

The one who loved strawberries was Nicholas.

What I was slowly piecing together in my mind were all memories with my ex-husband Nicholas.

Seeing Rafe not moving, I looked at him suspiciously:

“Why aren’t you eating? Did my brain injury make me remember wrong? But I clearly remember my husband loving these. Don’t tell me I had another husband?”

“Of course not! Who else could it be but me? I love them—I was just too moved to react.”

To prove he was the “husband” in my memories, Rafe, who had severe strawberry allergies, swallowed the bowl of strawberries in big gulps. Soon his neck and arms broke out in shocking red rashes, but we both acted like we saw nothing.

One smiled sweetly while feeding, the other forced a smile while eating.

To outsiders we looked like a fairy-tale couple, but in reality we were a resentful pair torturing each other in hatred.

In the days that followed, I “remembered” new things almost daily.

I dragged Rafe, who had severe acrophobia, to go skydiving because I “remembered” my husband being passionate about extreme sports.

To play along with this act, Rafe came down pale-faced and vomiting bile, but still made excuses:

“I’m not scared—I’ve just been too tired from work lately, so my body’s not in good shape.”

I paused and smiled like an innocent girl:

“Why didn’t you say so earlier? Next time we won’t do this.”
