Revenge Is the Best Wedding Gift Chapter 02

“Alright, I know you’re obsessed with me. See you tonight—I’ll drop Lavinia off at her apartment first.”

Rafe’s voice yanked me back from those unbearable memories.

He hung up the call, leaving only the sound of our breathing in the car.

After a moment, Rafe broke the silence first: “Hungry? Let’s get your favorite cupcakes from that French bakery first, then I’ll take you home.”

His tone was impossibly gentle.

As if everything that just happened was merely an illusion.

This only made me look more like a complete joke—red-eyed and trembling all over.

“Rafe, why are you torturing me like this?”

“You swore before God that you’d cherish me for life.”

My voice was hoarse, and shameful tears spilled from my eyes.

But this time, Rafe didn’t lovingly wipe away my tears like he used to.

He leaned back lazily in the leather seat, looking at me with a half-smile:

“Lavinia, if you had chosen me the first time, I probably would have pampered you like a princess for life. But now, you’re just someone else’s leftovers, second-hand goods. Why should I remain faithful for you?”

He handed me a tissue like he was giving charity.

But I shrank back violently, looking at him like he was a demon.

We were college classmates, all Ivy League graduates.

A few years ago, both he and Nicholas had confessed their feelings to me.

Back then, I chose Nicholas.

Rafe graciously offered his congratulations, and after marriage I deliberately kept my distance from him.

Until Nicholas cheated.

I couldn’t handle the double blow of miscarriage and betrayal, so I slit my wrists in the bathtub.

Rafe appeared in my life like a guardian angel.

He healed my wounds and literally pulled me back from the edge of hell.

Remembering all the good things he’d done for me, I desperately questioned him: “If you minded my past so much, why did you pursue me in the first place? Why did you get together with me?”

Looking into each other’s eyes, Rafe sighed helplessly: “I thought I could not care, but when we started planning the wedding…”

He looked at me with an extremely troubled smile:

“You were too practiced at everything.”

“When we took engagement photos, you knew how to negotiate prices with the photographer; when buying the diamond ring, you even knew to get a fake moissanite ring for the ceremony so the real one wouldn’t get lost; even today at city hall, you knew exactly what style of white dress to wear without looking up any guides…”

The darker Rafe’s expression became, the more he spoke.

“Everything you did was blatantly mocking me—that I, Rafe Grey, was marrying experienced second-hand goods. Lavinia, I couldn’t swallow that.”

Tears completely blurred my vision.

When I couldn’t see clearly, somehow I heard even more distinctly.

“But I still love you.”

“So since you were married to Nicholas for a year, I’ll fool around for a year too, then come back to our family. That’s called even—isn’t that fair?”

Suddenly there was warmth on my cheek.

I blinked hard, and large teardrops fell onto Rafe’s hand.

He jerked back like he’d been burned.

“This isn’t fair at all!”

“If you minded, you should have told me honestly instead of rescuing me under false pretenses, then pushing me off a cliff again!”

“Rafe, I want a divorce!”

I screamed hysterically, feeling like my soul was being torn apart.

He just watched me break down coldly. Only after I’d exhausted myself and quieted down did he speak like a judge from on high:

“The papers are already signed—legally we’re already married. Fair or unfair, that’s not for you to decide anymore.”

“Divorce? Don’t even think about it. You’d better accept reality. If you can’t accept it, you’ll just have to endure it.”

With that, Rafe suddenly pushed open the car door on my side and casually shoved me out:

“Your attitude right now really pisses me off. Walk home yourself and think about it.”
