Rejected Eleven Times, I Chose a Second Mate Instead Chapter 08

Rejected Eleven Times, I Chose a Second Mate Instead Chapter 08

Victor’s hands curled into fists as he barely hid his shock. “It’s just a stupid game. You’re taking it

seriously?”

“I told you. You were always going to be my bride. You are my future Luna.”

“Are you still angry with me?”

I almost laughed at his arrogance.

He chose Yvette ten times. He had my mother locked in a mental hospital. He formed a mate bond with Yvette. And somehow, I was the one being unreasonable.

I ignored him and kept adjusting the chairs.

Victor stepped in front of me. “Vera, stop joking around.”

“You and Damon aren’t right for each other. Are you really going to stay in Northern Territory forever? You

won’t last there.”

“And you think he’s going to keep you on a pedestal forever? I bet he’s never been without women on the side. Now that he’s had his fun, he wants you to come play Luna.”

I laughed bitterly. “Victor, not everyone is like you.”

“Besides, you don’t get a say in who I marry. We’re done.”

Victor looked like he couldn’t believe his ears. “Done? I don’t believe you’ve forgotten everything between

You can’t be that cold.”
He stared at me, eyes red.

I met his gaze and spoke slowly. “The cold one has always been you.”

I turned and walked away without looking back.

He stood there frozen for a long time.

The night before the mating ceremony, I got word that my father was in critical condition.

When I got to the hospital, Yvette was crying hysterically. “This is all your fault! If you hadn’t made Dad so angry, he wouldn’t be in here!”

She raised her hand to hit me, but I was faster, I slapped her first.

She was too stunned to speak.

“My mother,” I said quietly. “I haven’t forgotten.”

Then I looked at my father, weak and failing on the bed. “You were never a good husband or a good father.”

He couldn’t make a sound, but the tears ran down his face.

“This might be the last time I see you. I leave for Northern Territory tomorrow. Take care of yourself.”

I turned and walked out. Victor was there, opening his mouth like he wanted to say something.

“Vera. Are you really going to leave me?”

I twisted my engagement ring without answering and walked away.

He would understand, what we’d had was gone.

That night, my father died. Yvette was the killer.

When she found out he had left everything to me in his will, she smothered him with a pillow.

They arrested her on the spot.

On the day of my mating ceremony with Damon, Victor drank himself senseless.

On the way to Northern Territory, he crashed his car. He’s still in a coma.

I turned off my phone, feeling nothing much.

In the ceremony hall, Damon slid the ring onto my finger and said the words, “Until death.”

I put the ring on his hand. “I do.”

I knew the future was uncertain.

But in that moment, I felt more loved than I ever had before.

Maybe honoring my mother’s wish could also mean giving myself a chance.

Maybe if I let things happen naturally, something wonderful might come of it.
