Reincarnation Failed, I Became A Cat To Save The True Heiress Chapter 08

I had no idea how long I’d been out.

Warmth. Everywhere.

Machines beeped nearby.

I opened my eyes. White. Everything was white.

I was inside a veterinary ICU oxygen chamber. My front paws were in casts. Tubes crossed my body.

Through the glass, I saw Alistair.

Red-rimmed eyes. Days of stubble. He looked like he hadn’t slept since I went down.

The second my eyes opened, he was on his feet.

“Doctor, Marmalade’s awake!”

Vets crowded around the incubator, running checks.

“This… this shouldn’t be possible.”

The lead vet kept looking from the monitors to me and back again, shaking his head.

“Sir, when Marmalade came in, he had multiple organ ruptures, severe internal bleeding, and no vital signs. He was clinically dead.”

“But somehow his body started healing itself at a rate I’ve never seen. He just… came back.”

I rolled my eyes.

[Please. You think a hundred-year warranty from the big boss of the Underworld is just for show?

Alistair exhaled, and his fists uncurled for the first time in days.

He pressed his hand against the glass where I lay.

“You did good, Marmalade. You saved my sister and her daughter. This family owes you everything.”

The door opened.

A nurse wheeled Serena in.

She was pale, but the hollowness behind her eyes was gone. The baby was in her arms.

“Marmalade!” Her eyes filled with tears the second she saw me looking back at her.

She wheeled up to the glass, and the tears came fast.

“I’m so sorry, Marmalade. If I hadn’t been so blind, you never would’ve gotten hurt like this.”

I lifted my one good paw and tapped the glass.

[Hey. Cut it out. I’m right here, aren’t I? Still breathing. Still gorgeous.]

The baby squirmed in Serena’s arms, her tiny voice bubbling up.

[Kitty’s awake! I’m so, so happy!]

[Get better soon, okay? I will give you all the treats!]

My chest went warm. This little one was worth every minute.

Serena wiped her face and steadied herself.

“Don’t worry about a thing, Marmalade. The monsters who did this to us are locked away for good.”

Alistair leaned against the wall.

“Julian and Chloe were sentenced.”

“Multiple convictions. Life without parole. Both of them.”

“And I made sure the warden knew exactly who they were. They won’t have one easy day in there”

I purred.

They got exactly what they deserved.

And the imposter?

I couldn’t ask, but Alistair read me like he always did.

A cold smile crossed his face.

“The imposter went into foster care.”

“But Julian has a distant cousin out in coal country. A real piece of work.”

“I made sure she heard there might be money in it. She filed for custody the next day.”

“Three sons in that house already. Word is they’ve been looking for a free maid and a punching

bag.”

“Let’s just say her new life is going to be… educational.”

A dark, mean satisfaction settled in my chest.

That kid had been rotten from the start. A few years in that house would cure her of the princess

routine.

Serena looked down at her daughter, and the hardness in her face melted away.

“I named her Stella.”

“My little star. I want her to have the brightest, safest life there is.”

[Stella. Yeah. That’s perfect.]

I turned the name over in my mind and felt it settle.

Stella Sterling giggled, almost like she knew.

[Thank you, Mom! Thank you, Uncle Alistair!]

(Thank you, Kitty!]

Sunlight poured through the window and settled over all of us, warm, steady, and long overdue.
