I instinctively turned my head.

Chloe was already on the floor of the corridor, unconscious.

I’d just started to move when the butt of a gun slammed into the back of my neck,

and the world went black.

When I came to, Chloe and I were both tied up in an abandoned warehouse

Chloe was crying softly.

“Who are you? Why did you take us…?”

A man with a long scar across his face raised a hand and slapped her hard.

“Because of that fiancé of yours, Alaric McCall.”

“He took my West District operation. Cut

off my money.”

So, it was the West District crew.

That was the territory Alaric had

just acquired through my settlement

agreement.

They didn’t recognize me. Chloe, who had been by Alaric’s side constantly, had

become their target instead.

I slowly began to work my wrists, using the blade hidden inside a fake nail to saw

at the rope.

When you live in a world like this, you always have a way to defend yourself.

Scarface took me for a common gambler. He spat on the ground.

“Just your bad luck, running into her.”

“Call your family. Have them wire five million, and I’ll let you go.”

Chloe’s tears wouldn’t stop.

“Miss, I’m so sorry. I got you into this.”

“Don’t be afraid. My fiancé is very

powerful. He’ll come save us.

When she spoke of Alaric, her eyes were filled with absolute trust.

I didn’t answer her. I just worked faster.

Scarface apparently couldn’t get through on the phone. In a fit of rage, he kicked over a metal drum.

“Damn it. Alaric won’t answer? Fine. I’ll

send him a proper gift.”
