After my discharge, Alaric said he was busy and didn’t come by again.

I was leaving tomorrow.

While he was gone, I returned to our penthouse apartment above the casino to get my passport and other important documents from the safe.

When the elevator doors opened, my legs gave out, and I stumbled forward.

I didn’t fall.

A pair of slender hands caught me.

“Are you all right?” The voice was soft, laced with genuine concern.

I looked up and met Chloe’s eyes.

She was wearing a dealer’s uniform. Even standing here, she still looked a little out of place.

She didn’t recognize me. She thought I was just another gambler who’d lost everything.

“I’m fine. Thank you.”

I straightened up, wanting only to leave as quickly as possible.

But she pulled me toward the staff break room.

“You look awful. You should sit down for a minute.”

To my own surprise, I didn’t refuse.

She poured me a cup of warm water, then pulled a pack of cookies and a sandwich from her locker.

“Eat something. Don’t feel too bad about losing. Just go home. Someone will be waiting for you.”

When I didn’t say anything, she hesitated, then pulled a few bills from her pocket and pressed them into my hand.

“Here, for a cab. I can’t help you with a plane ticket, I’m sorry.”

My throat tightened.

I wanted so badly to tell her to get away from Alaric.

That man’s tenderness was a poison that would kill her in the end.

The words rose to my lips, but I swallowed them.

If she knew who I was, she would surely leave Alaric.

And then Alaric would trace it all back to me.

Leo and I were only a day away from freedom. I couldn’t risk it now.

I accepted her kindness, thanked her, and hurried out through the back service exit.

The moment I stepped into the alley, something cold pressed against my temple.
