Through the haze, I felt someone lift me into his arms. It was probably Ethan.

His voice shook with a panic. I had never heard before.

“Nora, stay with me. Please. I’m begging you to stay with me.”

It was bitterly ironic.

After ten years, the first time I ever heard him speak to me like that was when I was dying.

When I woke again, the first thing I saw was a stark white ceiling. The sharp smell of antiseptic stung my

nose.

I tried to move my fingers, and a tearing pain ripped through my chest.

Ethan was asleep with his head resting on the edge of my hospital bed.

He jolted awake at the sound of me moving. The moment he saw that my eyes were open, his eyes immediately reddened.

“Nora, you’re awake. The doctors said you almost died. Do you have any idea how terrified I was?”

I turned my face away. I could not stand watching him put on this act.

“Has my mother’s funeral… already been held?”

Ethan was silent for several seconds.

“She was cremated. Her ashes are being held at the funeral home. You can collect them whenever you’re

ready.”

I stared at the pale ceiling as tears slipped down my cheeks.

I had not even been able to see my mother one last time before she was hurriedly crematpd.

When Ethan saw me crying, he reached out to wipe away my tears.

I turned my head aside. His hand froze in midair before slowly falling back to his side.

“Nora, I’ll… I’ll get you answers about what happened to your mother.”

I closed my eyes. I did not want to say another word to him.

Ethan stood beside the bed for a long time before finally walking out.

A deliberately hushed argument drifted in from the hallway. Sabrina was speaking.

“Ethan, you promised you would stop getting involved with her! She came at me with a knife, and you still

saved her?”

“She just lost her mother. She isn’t thinking clearly. Can you not do this right now?”

Sabrina’s voice suddenly turned shrill.

“You’re yelling at me over a woman who nearly killed me? Don’t forget that all your connections and

resources came from my family!”

Their footsteps gradually faded, and the room fell silent again.

My phone screen lit up with a message from Megan.

Megan: [Nora, I’m sorry about what happened, but I didn’t have a choice. I work for Sabrina. If I didn’t do what she told me, I’d be fired in no time.]

I did not reply. I only took a screenshot of the message.

For the next several days, Ethan came to the hospital every day.

Sometimes he brought flowers. Other times, he brought soup.

He acted as though nothing had happened, sitting beside my bed while he peeled apples and talked about his

company.

“Nora, once you’re better, I’ll take you to see the house I just bought.”

“I had everything from your last livestream taken down. No one online will attack you again.”

I never said a word.

Eventually, Ethan lost his patience and hurled the apple into the trash.

“What else do you want from me? I’ve done everything I was supposed to do. I even apologized!”

I turned my head toward him. “I want my mother back.”

His mouth opened, but no words came out.

The next day, I went to the police.

They quickly obtained surveillance footage from the hospital in the other city.

The officer frowned as he reviewed the footage.

“Ms. Blake, you said your mother jumped after being harassed. But we reviewed footage from the entire hospital, and no suspicious visitors entered or left her floor that day.”

“These are the findings from the medical examiner’s review. According to the report, your mother died of

multiple-organ failure-caused by terminal liver cancer. There were no fractures or bruises consistent with a

fall.”

In other words, they were saying my mother had died from her illness, not from jumping out of a window.

A deafening buzz filled my head.

“That’s impossible!”

“I saw the video her aide sent me. That fall killed my mother!”
