Before the officer could respond, Ethan rested a hand lightly on my shoulder.

“Nora, your mother died som her illness. Are you sure you’re remembering it correctly?”

He explained to the officer, “I’m sorry. She just lost her mother. She may not be thinking clearly-”

I slapped him across the face.

“What the hell are you talking about? You promised you would find out what really happened to my

mother!”

Ethan patiently tried to calm me down.

“I did look into it, but your mother died from her illness.”

It felt as though I had been plunged into ice.

How was that possible?

My mother’s aide had video-called me. I had seen my mother lying on the ground outside the hospital with

my own eyes.

With shaking hands, I searched through our message history, but what I found left me devastated.

The messages were gone. The video was gone. Even the cáll history had been wiped clean.

I looked up at Ethan. He was perfectly composed.

“Nora, you’ve been under too much stress. You need to rest.”

“You deleted everything?”

He did not deny it.

“I’m sorry about your mother, but you have to move forward.”

I lost control again.

I grabbed a pillow and hurled it at him. “Get out! Get out!”

Ethan’s expression darkened, but he did not lash out.

“We’ll talk when you’ve calmed down.”

After he left, I pulled the IV from the back of my hand and forced myself to get dressed.

A nurse tried to stop me. It took every bit of strength I had to speak.

“I just want to go for a walk. Are you really going to stop me from doing even that?”

The nurse hesitated when she saw how pale I was and how determined I looked.

“Ms. Blake, your stitches haven’t been removed yet. Please don’t go far.”

I never expected to run into Ethan and Sabrina.

A wave of nausea rolled through me, and all I wanted was to get away.

But then the two of them started arguing.

Sabrina pointed a finger in Ethan’s face. “You’d rather believe that slut than me? Have you lost your mind?”

Ethan’s voice was calmer than I expected.

“You went after Nora’s mother. Did you really think this would just disappear?”

Sabrina shook with rage: “What else do you expect me to do? Pay with my life?”

“I already deleted the messages for you. I’ve done more than enough. But I’m still going to find out exactly what happened.”

“If you ever go after Nora again, you’ll answer to me.”

I stood frozen in the hallway.

So that was the truth.

Ethan had deleted the messages to protect Sabrina.

He knew what she had done, yet he had chosen to pretend he knew nothing.

Hatred surged through me.

Sabrina clung to Ethan, but he tore his arm from her grip without hesitation.

When he turned around, his eyes met mine,

Shock and panic flashed across his face.

I turned and walked away.

I heard Ethan running after me as Sabrina screamed hysterically behind him, “Ethan, don’t leave! Come back!”

Ethan caught my wrist at the end of the hallway. Only then did I realize tears were streaming down my face.

“Nora, listen to me.”

“I was trying to protect you. The Caldwell family has enormous influence in Port Haven. If you keep investigating, you’ll be the one who gets hurt.”

A chill shot up through my body.

He paused, then softened his voice..

“Nora, I’ve been gathering evidence of the Caldwell family’s crimes. When the time is right, I’ll make them pay. You have to trust me.”

I had trusted him too many times.

I trusted that he would marry me. I trusted that he was working toward our future.

Every time I believed him, I lost something else.

I heard myself say each word clearly.

“From this moment on, you and I have nothing to do with each other.”
