By the time Nathaniel got home, I was on the couch. Composed. Casual. Like nothing had happened.

But Nathaniel stopped in the doorway. His gaze swept the room. His brow creased.

“Was someone here?”

The magazines on the coffee table were slightly out of place. And the air still carried a trace of

perfume that wasn’t mine.

There was something tight in his voice. Almost nervous.

“No.” I kept my face blank, casually shifting a throw pillow to hide the second coffee cup.

“No one’s been here.”

Nathaniel stared at me. His face went stone cold.

I looked away first. My brain was already running numbers.

If the real girlfriend wanted me gone, then what? Where else was I going to find money like this?

The silence stretched. Nathaniel’s voice dropped.

“Harper. What are you thinking about?”

I flinched. Almost blew it. I put on my best clueless face.

“Just wondering which companies pay better.”

Nathaniel’s jaw tightened.

The next few days were tense.

Nathaniel was clearly upset about something, but he kept it locked down. When I tried to talk to \ him, all I got were one-word answers.

I was confused. Was I really about to get replaced by the love of his life?

The thought sparked something bitter in my chest that I couldn’t name.

When I’d first moved in, the butler had warned me. There was one room I was never to open.

Nathaniel would disappear inside for hours. Like something in there held a piece of him.

Back then, I’d just given the butler a knowing nod.

“Say no more. Every CEO has a room dedicated to the one that got away.”

But now, picturing that woman’s face in that room, something in my chest ached in a way I wasn’t, prepared for.

I told myself to let it go. But the feeling stayed there, dull and sour, and it wouldn’t leave.
