That’s right. Nathaniel was catastrophically face-blind. Clinically, apparently.

Which meant no matter how many times I said something stupid and got “fired,” I was still his right-hand assistant. He thought he had five assistants. I collected all five paychecks.

Fire one of me, hire another. I was also HR.

“Chloe, arrange my afternoon schedule.”

I was already shrugging off my blazer and pulling on a gray blouse. “On it, boss.”

“Autumn, set up a meeting with Richard.”

I knotted an orange tie one-handed, pitching my voice half an octave lower. “Already done, sir. Three o’clock.”

“Winter, organize these files.”

I pushed through the door, yanking the pin from my bun and shaking my hair loose in one move.

“Already done, boss. The last batch is on your desk.”

“Not bad.” Nathaniel nodded. “You’re a hell of a lot more reliable than Holly from last week.”

Of course I was. Holly Evans was also me. She got fired last week for forgetting the sugar in his coffee.

“Mabel… Oh, Mabel was just fired.”

I slipped the flower clip out of my hair before he turned around. “Yes, sir. Already handled.”

“Give her workload to Chloe.”

Nathaniel started to leave, then stopped. He turned back, frowning, giving me a slow once-over. “Why are all of my assistants dressed the same today?”

I didn’t flinch. “Company dress code, sir. New policy.”

He frowned. “Put some variety into it. I can barely tell you all apart as it is.”

“I’ll be sure to expense the wardrobe allowance, sir.”

“Fine.”

“Since Chloe’s absorbing Mabel’s workload, her salary should be tripled.”

Yes! Mabel’s severance plus Chloe’s triple pay… that put me at twelve paychecks this month.
