Years ago, when the news of Helen’s marriage reached him overseas, he was devastated, drowning his

sorrows in alcohol day after day.

waitress there, who saved his life.

“Noah, I know you don’t feel that way about me, but now that Helen is gone, won’t you just let me stay by your

side?”

“I can wait for you. I’ll wait until the day you’re ready to accept me and love me.”

Jessica was not a striking beauty, but she was easy on the eyes.

A slight frown gave her an air of fragile, pitiful innocence.

As she spoke, she leaned closer to Noah, her shoulder brushing against his arm in a deliberate attempt to

elicit his sympathy.

But Noah’s mind was consumed entirely by Helen, and he was in no mood to deal with Jessica.

So when Mary walked into the hospital room carrying a treatment tray, she immediately saw the two of them

pressed close together on the bed.

Mary was Helen’s best friend, and the three of them had been college classmates.

She had witnessed how deeply Helen and Noah loved each other back then, so the sight before her sent a

sharp pang through her heart.

She could not help but sneer, “Noah, you certainly are in high spirits. The moment you wake up, you’re

already busy getting cozy with your fiancé.”

Jessica gasped in fright and ran out of the room, feigning embarrassment.

Noah pinched the bridge of his nose, a headache brewing. “Mary, what you just saw wasn’t-”

Mary cut him off. “Save your breath. You two are a couple anyway, so whatever you do is perfectly normal.”

Her tone was dripping with sarcasm and resentment. “I just didn’t expect that after three years, you’d become

this cold-blooded.”

“Helen dragged herself through hell and back to support you, yet you left her to die, only to turn around and

get cozy with another woman.”

Noah clenched his fists, his heart aching as if pierced by a knife, but he still forced his defenses up.

“Helen was the one who betrayed me first. What right do you have to judge me?”

But in the next second, Mary burst into tears.

“You all blame Helen, but who could she ever turn to?”

“During your first two years abroad, she worked herself to the bone. She survived on cheap sandwiches just to wire you her savings so your life over there would be easier!”

“Then her mother fell ill, and she didn’t breathe a single word to you because she didn’t want you to worry!”

“That was exactly when Oliver used her mother’s medical bills to blackmail her into marrying him!”

“Her mother was in critical condition and couldn’t wait a single day. Do you honestly think Helen had any

other choice?”

Noah froze at her words.

He knew everyone in New York high society looked down on Helen and her mother-an illegitimate daughter

and an abandoned mistress.

But Noah knew better than anyone how grueling Helen and her mother’s lives had been for the past twenty

years.

Throughout college, Helen never took a single dime from her father.

She paid for her own tuition and living expenses by working odd jobs.

In reality, Helen’s father had deceived her mother from the start.

By the time she was pregnant with Helen, she discovered the man already had a family.

She became the other woman in the eyes of the world without ever meaning to.

And her daughter bore the stigma of being an illegitimate child from the moment she was born.

With that, Mary threw the medicine bottle at Noah.

“What’s the use of saying all this now? Her mother is gone, and Helen is gone too.”
