Hanna noticed nothing wrong and nodded. “Yeah, I’ve been terrified of water since I was a kid!”

Oliver clenched his fists, his voice dropping to a low whisper. “Something came up with the business I have

to go.”

Ignoring Hanna’s cries behind him, he got into his car and slammed on the gas.

On the drive back, Oliver wasted no time calling his assistant.

“Investigate something for me. Right now!”

During the two hours he waited, Oliver paced like a caged beast, a suffocating dread pooling in his stomach.

When he was thirteen, he had fallen into the ocean in the Hamptons.

A little girl had jumped in without a second thought to pull him out.

She was beautiful, her long dark hair plastered against her pale face.

She wore a seashell necklace around her neck.

She told him her mother had made it by hand.

She cherished it more than anything.

Before they parted, she had told him her name.

But the wind had been howling so fiercely.

Oliver opened his email and froze.

Meanwhile, Helen and her mother had been selling handmade souvenirs on the very beach in the Hamptons

where he had nearly drowned.

The email included old childhood photos of Helen.

In every single photo, that seashell necklace was wrapped around her neck.

Hanna had stolen Helen’s most prized possession.

Realizing he had loved the wrong person all along, Oliver smashed his laptop in a fit of rage.

On the other side of town, Noah finally woke up after spending days in a coma from a severe lung infection.

If he had known it would end like this, he would have swallowed his pride and backed down.

He never would have driven her to the edge.

He had hated Helen for breaking their childhood promise.

During those three years abroad, he had worked himself to the bone, wanting nothing more than to give her a

secure, luxurious life.

He had survived countless lonely nights solely by thinking of her.

Yet the moment his business began to take off, he received news that she had married into the Martinez

family for wealth and status.

He had been desperate to prove that leaving him was her biggest mistake.

He wanted to show her he wasn’t desperate.

But the second he saw her at the engagement party, he knew he was lying to himself.

His entire heart still belonged to Helen.

The door to the hospital room swung open.

Noah’s voice was hoarse. “Helen isn’t here. We can stop putting on a show.”
