One Don Hates Me to the Bone, the Other Seeks My Ruin Chapter 06

Over the past year, the number of nights he had spent here could be counted on one hand.

He didn’t love Helen.

To him, she was nothing more than Hanna’s substitute.

Now that Hanna was back, Helen’s life meant nothing to him.

Sitting in the empty, silent living room, he suddenly remembered that not long ago, he had taken Helen right

here on this Italian leather sofa.

He had taken her roughly, forcing his will upon her.

The image of her flushed face, her stubborn resistance, and her quiet endurance refused to leave his mind.

It irritated him.

He popped open a bottle of whiskey, pouring glass after glass down his throat.

Perhaps the pitch-black waves from earlier had triggered a fear buried deep in his mind.

He remembered his childhood.

On a beach in the Hamptons, his curiosity had gotten the better of him, and a massive wave had swept him.

out to sea.

It was a little girl wearing a seashell necklace who had dragged him back to the safety of the shore.

Oliver gasped, jolting awake.

Only then did he realize he had been having a nightmare.

He panted heavily, his head throbbing as if it were about to split open.

Instinctively, he muttered into the dark, “Helen, get me some water.”

Only dead silence answered him.

Oliver froze.

Reality rushed back-Helen was gone, swallowed by the sea.

They hadn’t even recovered her body.

His phone buzzed with dozens of missed calls.

All from Hanna.

She wanted him to come over to the family home.

She said her parents had something important to discuss with him.

Oliver assumed they wanted to arrange Helen’s funeral.

After all, he was still legally her husband.

When he arrived, the family maids had already prepared a lavish feast.

Hanna immediately rushed over, wrapping her arms intimately around his in front of her parents.

She didn’t try to hide her affection.

Hanna’s parents were exceptionally warm toward him as well.

Every word out of their mouths was a subtle push for him to officially marry Hanna.

Though he had always intended to marry Hanna.

And he had promised to make her the Donna of the Martinez family.

But Helen was still missing, her fate unknown.

As her family, they didn’t show a single ounce of grief. Instead, they were already plotting to have the eldest daughter take her place as Donna Martinez.

Oliver ran half of the New York underworld; he was no saint, but their cold-blooded calculation sickened him.

For Hanna’s sake, he suppressed his anger and offered hollow, polite nods.

The moment he walked out the door, Hanna chased after him.

“Oliver, do you look down on me because I was with another man? Is that why you won’t marry me?”

Oliver forced himself to be patient. “Of course not. Don’t think like that.”

Hanna demanded, unsatisfied, “Then why didn’t you agree to my parents’ proposal just now?”

The hangover was kicking in, and the anger he had been holding back made his head pound.

Pressing his temples, he tried to keep his voice level. “Helen and I aren’t divorced yet.”

Hanna’s voice grew sharp and obsessive. “But Helen is dead-”

Meeting Oliver’s dark, chilling glare, Hanna choked on her words and managed to squeeze out a few tears.

“Oliver, I’m devastated about Helen too. But we have to face reality… I’m just so scared. Scared that you don’t

want me anymore…”

Seeing her tears, Oliver’s heart softened slightly.

He reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair away from her collarbone, his tone gentler.

Even if Helen is gone, there are legal procedures the family has to resolve. Just be patient…

As he spoke, his eyes fell on the expensive diamond necklace resting on her chest.

A memory sparked, and he asked, “That seashell necklace of yours. You haven’t worn it in a long time

Satisfied with his promise, Hanna smiled. “Oh, that cheap thing with the shell? I have no idea where I threw it

The design was so tacky anyway.”

Oliver’s hand froze in her hair.

After a long pause, his voice turned stiff. “They just opened a new water park uptown. Want to check it out?”

Hanna pouted. “No way. I don’t even know how to swim. Why don’t we go to the Bahamas instead?”

A loud ringing echoed in Oliver’s ears. He repeated coldly, “You don’t know how to swim?”
