Jagger jumped. The rope slipped from his hands. He’d been scared of his uncle since he was a child. Everyone was.

But then he saw who was behind Beckett.

Old Mr. Hamilton.

Jagger steadied himself. He was the only grandson. The old man adored him. Treated him like a treasure.

Jagger ran over and threw his arms around the old man. He squeezed out two dramatic tears. “Grandfather. I’ve missed you like crazy.”

Tatum stepped forward too. She was only the adopted daughter. She didn’t have the same closeness. She stood to the side.

“Sir. Jagger and I know we were wrong. Jagger was ready to come back and finish the wedding with Miss Avery. It’s just that…”

Jagger’s voice turned indignant. “The gold digger went behind my back. Got pregnant with some other man’s bastard. Tried to pass it off as Hamilton blood.”

“Don’t worry, Grandfather. I already took care of it. That bastard is dead. She won’t get away with it.”

Mr. Hamilton shoved Jagger off him.

That’s when he saw me. By the pool. Barely alive.

Beckett was already at my side. His hands shook as he untied the ropes. He saw the blood. So much blood. His voice broke.

“Ave. How bad is it?”

I looked at him. Tears poured down my face. “Beckett. The baby. Please. Save the baby…”
