The ghost next to me was practically bouncing off the walls.

“Yes! Ellie, you’re finally free!”

The words were barely out of my mouth before Ethan’s phone rang.

“Shaw-Bennett deal — terminated.”

“Shaw Industries: bankrupt.”

He hung up. His face drained of all color. And then he just crumpled to the floor.

I watched and said nothing.

The ghost could barely contain herself.

“They’re not just broke — they owe hundreds of millions. Every last cent is gone.”

“Good. Let him and Lily go flip burgers together.”

Ethan looked up at me. Lost. Panicked.

A long moment passed. His lips trembled.

“Why?”

I met his hollow stare. “That’s exactly what I want to know.”

He inched forward on his knees, reaching for my hand.

“Shaw Industries has been dying for years. The only reason my family was willing to hold it together was this engagement.”

“You burned that down yourself. Don’t stand there and expect us to save you now.”

“I knelt in my dad’s study for three straight days before he agreed.”

Ethan dropped his head. A tear hit the floor.

His voice was hollow. Nothing like the sharp, certain person I used to know.

“You never told me.”

“So us getting engaged. It wasn’t about us. It was a business arrangement.”

I brushed the corner of my eye and looked at him on the floor.

“Yes.”

His shoulders shook. His eyes were red.

“I thought you were trying to force my hand. I didn’t know. I never looked into it.”

“And Lily. I was just curious. I never wanted to lose you. I mean that.”

The ghost scoffed.

“He wanted everything without giving up anything. Exactly what he deserved.”

“Because if you’d stayed, he would’ve gone crawling back to her. And eventually taken your kidney to save her life.”

“Ellie. I came back for this. Please don’t undo it.”

I glanced at the ghost.

“If you never wanted to break up, why did you arrange to have me filmed?”

Ethan scrambled: “I lost my mind, Ellie, I—”

Before he could finish, two men in black appeared and took him.

The ghost noticed how quiet I’d gone. She drifted close and stayed beside me.

I blinked, asked for the rest of the day off, and went home.

“Tell me what happens. The future you showed me. My kidney, my daughter, my parents. Tell me everything.”

The ghost lay beside me on the bed, her eyes full of worry.

Before she could get a word out, she was already crying.
