“Ellie. You cannot go back to him. No matter what he says.”

“After the wedding, Lily told everyone she had kidney disease. That your blood type matched. Ethan had you operated on. Didn’t ask.”

“Your second year of marriage, you had a daughter. Lily said she wanted her. She couldn’t have her own children. Ethan just handed her over. My… my granddaughter.”

“Lily treated her terribly. You tried everything to get her back. Ethan had the Shaw name destroyed, the family dragged through a bankruptcy investigation.”

The ghost looked at me as she talked, memorizing my face like it was something she might lose.

“When you finally went to confront him, he was holding Lily.”

She stopped talking and crashed into my arms. Her tears were cool and weightless, gone the moment they touched me.

“He told you it was all your fault. Karma. That you deserved every bit of it. But Lily had been playing this from the start. He knew. He always knew.”

She pressed her face into my neck. Nuzzled close.

“At the end, you took Lily with you off the 28th floor. You didn’t go alone.”

I’d stopped crying somewhere along the way. I just sat there, rethinking every year I’d spent loving Ethan Shaw.

I was quiet. So was she. She just waited.
