Not Enough Support From My Husband His Best Friend Stepped In Chapter 04

“The baby’s only a few months old and she’s wearing a thin little onesie?”

“What kind of father is that bastard Bryson?”

I looked down at the washed-out sleeper on my daughter.

I’d picked it up on sale at the baby shop for barely more than ten dollars, the cheapest one they had.

The clerk had stared at me with open contempt.

“You’re a mother and still skimp on your baby. If you can’t afford it, you shouldn’t have had a child.”

A heavy ache settled in my chest. Who would believe a woman buying discounted baby clothes was married to a CEO pulling in millions each month?

“Where’s the nanny?”

“I couldn’t keep up with her pay, so she left.”

Margaret frowned. “How could you not afford a nanny’s wages?”

“Elsie told me to handle the baby myself. She said every other woman manages it, so why can’t I.”

Margaret slammed her hand on the table. “This is too much! Since when does an outsider stick her nose in our business?”

She put down everything she’d brought and transferred me a hundred thousand on the spot. Then she stormed off to confront Elsie.

I thought things were finally turning around.

I didn’t know what Elsie said to her. When Margaret called me again, her voice was full of apology.

“Olive, I know those few hundred dollars a month are hard on you. But Elsie has her reasons. Try to make do.”

A bitter smile tugged at my lips as I listened to her words.

I didn’t know what the secretary’s reasons were. I only knew Margaret had switched sides too.

Half a month later, Caden showed up again with bags of supplies.

He knew his way around the place by now. As soon as he walked in, he helped me wash clothes for the baby and me, cleaned the house, and headed to the kitchen to cook.

Even the baby grinned at him. For a split second, it felt like we were the real family.

That night, Bryson happened to come home and catch Caden holding our baby while making me dinner.

His face turned livid instantly. He grabbed Caden by the collar and snapped.

“Caden, what the hell are you doing in my house holding my kid?”

Caden shot back with a cold stare.

“You won’t take care of your own wife and kid, yet you dare question me? Eight hundred bucks is barely pocket change.”

“You’d spend more than that just on a pair of socks for your little secretary.”

Bryson froze. He turned toward me, stunned.

“What do you mean eight hundred a month? I sent you eighty thousand!”

Caden went still, and so did I.

I lifted my pale face, a cold chill washing over my whole body.

“W-what did you say? It was only eight hundred. How could it have been eighty thousand?”

“I told Elsie to transfer eighty thousand each month from the company account to your card starting in your fifth month of pregnancy.”

Bryson pulled out his phone, brought up the records. “See for yourself.”

The records did show eighty thousand sent each month, but the recipient account wasn’t mine.

I spoke quietly. “That’s not my account.”

Bryson’s face paled sharply. “Elsie said you got a new bank card. She claimed this was the new account number you’d given her…”

His voice trailed off, shock flickering across his eyes. “You’re saying you never got a new card, and that account isn’t yours?”

I shook my head. “It’s not mine.”

Bryson stood there, frozen. “How can this be… Elsie wouldn’t lie to me.”
