Not Enough Support From My Husband His Best Friend Stepped In Chapter 02

“Elsie already transferred this month’s living funds to you. The company’s cash flow is tight. Don’t splurge and make every dollar count.”

The call cut off abruptly, and my heart turned cold in an instant.

Three months ago, Bryson told me his secretary Elsie would handle household expenses from then on.

I called her for money. She answered with a smile in her voice.

“Mrs. Carter, Mr. Carter is dealing with cash flow issues right now. Household funds have been cut back, so you’ll need to spend carefully.”

When the money hit my account, I stared in shock.

“Bryson’s only giving me eight hundred?”

Her smile faded. “I’m just a secretary. This is Mr. Carter’s instruction.”

But I used to get a hundred thousand a month, and Bryson said I pinched pennies too much.

“Silly girl. You’re my wife. I earn money to spend it on you.”

He’d remembered how I’d lived in a cramped rental apartment beside him back then, swearing he’d give me everything good the world had to offer.

But how could a few hundred bucks possibly support the baby and me?

I tried to tell Bryson it wasn’t enough. Instead, I got a cold notice.

“Elsie says your frequent calls keep disrupting my work.”

“Book a time with Elsie before you try to reach me. She’ll put you through only after your request gets approved.”

“And Elsie says you’ve been complaining the money’s too little. Be reasonable.”

After that, I could barely reach Bryson at all.

Every appointment request got rejected by Elsie, citing his busy schedule.

Once the money landed in my account, I headed straight to the supermarket and bought the two cheapest cans of formula.

Hardly anything remained after paying for the formula and utility bills.

The second month brought the same amount. I bought diapers and bread.

When the third month’s payment arrived, only three diapers were left. The formula can was empty, and I’d run out of bread.

The third eight hundred had barely landed when the nanny saw it.

She sneered. “Did you go bankrupt or something? What’s a few hundred bucks supposed to cover? Don’t hire a nanny if you can’t afford it.”

“I haven’t gotten paid for three months. Keep holding out on my wages, and I’ll take you to court.”

She ripped off her apron on the spot and stormed off.

Thinking back on that, I drew a shaky breath amid my despair.

I scrolled to a familiar name and called.

“Are you busy? Could you help me with the baby? There’s no formula left for the baby, and I haven’t eaten all day…”

My voice cracked as I spoke.

“I’m sorry. I know this is such an imposition.”

“But I have no other choice. I don’t know anyone else in this city. You’re the only number I have…”

There was a short pause on the line. “Stay there. I’m coming.”

Caden was Bryson’s college roommate and best friend.

He’d been our best man at our wedding. During the toast, he’d laughed and said, “If Bryson ever mistreats you, I’ll be the first to knock some sense into him.”

Turned out that promise came due faster than anyone expected.

Less than forty minutes later, the doorbell rang.

I opened it. Caden stood there with two bags, sweat dripping down his forehead.

He looked at me and froze.

“Hey, don’t tear up. Give me the baby.”

He handed me a cheeseburger and beef stew from the takeout bag. “Eat these.”

Then he pulled out two cans of the best formula and went to mix a bottle.

My hands shook too hard to hold the spoon. Two bites of stew and my stomach turned.
