No Longer a Silent Luna Chapter 03

No Longer a Silent Luna Chapter 03

I pulled my hand free and looked at him like he was ridiculous.

Back then, I really had clung to him.

I used to send him fifty messages a day, sometimes a hundred.

Our chat thread used to be flooded with my messages.

And whether he answered or not had been entirely up to him.

Now he was asking why I hadn’t checked in.

I let out a quiet, mocking laugh. ”Weren’t you the one who told me not to bother you unless it mattered?”

He froze then a trace of guilt flashed across his face.

That really had been what he asked for, but now that I was finally doing exactly that, something about it clearly bothered him.

Maybe even he didn’t understand why.

”That’s different…”

Elara slipped her arm through his and cut in before the silence between us could deepen.

”Corvin, Lyra just got back. Of course she’s in a bad mood. Don’t corner her with questions. I made breakfast. Lyra, at least have a little.”

As she spoke, she turned toward the kitchen to bring over the soup.

In her hand was a wadded-up piece of cloth she was using as a potholder, one corner hanging loose.

And I recognized it instantly as my eyes widened.

I rushed over and yanked the embroidery out of her hand.

In the struggle, the bowl slipped, and scalding soup splashed all over her hand.

She cried out, and tears filled her eyes almost instantly.

”Lyra, even if you don’t want to eat the soup I made, you didn’t have to do this to me.”

”I already apologized for what happened before. Why won’t you let me go?”

Corvin hurried to take her hand in both of his.

The back of it had gone red, and his face tightened with panic.

”It’s burned. Does it hurt?”

Elara leaned into him and sobbed even harder. ”I don’t know why Lyra keeps treating me like this. All these hands know how to do is cook.”

”They’re not precious like hers, not like some Alpha-born princess’s. But that doesn’t mean she gets to humiliate me.”

Corvin kept soothing her.

Then he looked up at me, his expression turning cold and sharp.

”Lyra, have you completely lost control? Do you want to kill Elara or something?”

I didn’t answer and I just stared at the piece of embroidery in my hands.

It had once been brand new.

Now it was stained with grease, torn in multiple places, ruined beyond repair.

I drew breath after shaky breath, forcing myself to stay calm.

Then I spread it open in front of Corvin and held it up for him to see.

My voice shook. ”Do you even remember what this is?”

He glanced at it and frowned impatiently.

”It’s just a piece of old embroidery. You hurt Elara over this? Lyra, do you have any conscience left?”

I laughed under my breath.

He had forgotten.

This was the last piece my mother had embroidered before she died.

It was her final blessing for the two of us.

Before she passed, she held my hand and said, ”Lyra, Corvin is a good boy. I can tell he truly loves you.”

”After I’m gone, he’ll take care of you. I can leave in peace.”

After my mother died, Frostmoon Pack fell apart almost overnight.

My biological father ran off in the middle of the night with his mistress.

I became the orphan nobody wanted.

It was Corvin who took my hand and led me step by step out of that cold pack house.

He had said, ”Lyra, don’t be afraid. You still have me. I’ll give you a home.”

What we once had had been so bright, so painfully beautiful, that even after it began to rot, I still couldn’t let go.

But now the cloth in my hands had split apart down the middle just like us.

And I finally understood that we had reached the end of the road.

”What, are you mute now?” Corvin snapped. ”Say something. Apologize to Elara.”

He ripped the cloth out of my hands.

I was pulled out of my thoughts and back into the room, back to the mess on the floor and Elara crying in his arms.

Her hand was only a little red.

The soup had been warm, not scalding.

I lifted my eyes and said calmly, ”Why should I apologize? She’s been sleeping with a mated man for this long. Did she ever apologize to me?”

”And you. You cheated on me with the housekeeper behind my back. Did you ever apologize?”

”Or what? If I don’t say sorry, are you going to throw me in jail again?”

I looked at him without blinking. ”Go ahead. How long this time?”
