No Longer a Silent Luna Chapter 01

No Longer a Silent Luna Chapter 01

Six months after I found out my Alpha mate, Corvin Darkmoor, had been cheating on me, he came to pick me up from jail.

When he saw the bruises and cuts all over my body, he curled his lips in a mocking little smile.

”Lyra, have you learned your lesson yet? How many times is this now that I’ve put you behind bars?”

”You’re not the untouchable princess of Frostmoon Pack anymore. It’s time you learned to keep that temper under control.”

As he said it, he even stepped back a little, like he was afraid I might throw myself into his arms and cry the way I used to.

But I didn’t react and simply slid into the back seat without a word.

After all, the front passenger seat belonged to Elara Quinn now.

A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes, then he smiled, clearly pleased.

”When we get back, apologize to Elara properly. And about that nursery you mentioned before, I’ll have it done for you.”

My body trembled as my hand moved instinctively to my lower belly.

He still didn’t know that the day I got locked up was the day I lost my pup.

The pup was gone. There was no need for a nursery anymore.

And I had no use for him anymore, either.

When he saw I wasn’t saying anything, he casually pulled a jewelry box from his pocket and tossed it into my lap.

”Here. I got your anniversary necklace back.”

”You threw a fit over it last time, didn’t you? Elara just borrowed it to wear for a couple of days. Don’t be so petty.”

I lifted my eyes slowly, and it took me a long moment to remember that our anniversary had been a month ago.

That was the day he had taken me up the mountain to watch the sunrise.

It had been ten below that night.

And because Elara had a nightmare, he left me there alone on the mountain and never came back for me until morning.

The anniversary gift that had been meant for me ended up around her neck.

Even now, that bone-deep cold still seemed to crawl up my spine whenever I thought about it.

And yet he thought I had only been upset over the necklace.

I opened the box.

The ruby that had once gleamed so brightly was dull now, and even the chain showed rust.

It was obviously fake.

Calmly, I pushed the box back toward him. ”No thanks. If she likes it, let her keep it.”

My distance made his face darken.

He was just about to say something when he looked down and noticed the cheap imitation for himself. His expression turned awkward for a split second.

”Elara probably mixed them up. I’ll get you a new one later.”

Then he let out a soft, indulgent laugh.

”She’s used to living frugally, and she hasn’t seen much. She probably thought this one was the same as the real one. Don’t blame her.”

The way he defended her was so blatant.

If this had happened before, I would’ve blown up on the spot.

But now I just smiled faintly and nodded. ”You’re right. A she-wolf from the backwoods can only know so much.”

He stared at me for a few seconds, caught off guard by how calm I was.

Then he turned and patted my head. ”What’s with you today? You’re being surprisingly easygoing today. Did you really learn your lesson?”

”As long as you stop picking on Elara, I’ll buy you anything you want.”

”Everything in Nighthowl Pack will belong to you and the pup one day. There’s no need to keep fighting with her. Learn to be more generous.”

”I’ll have the nursery done by next month at the latest. I’m just busy this week.”

I tilted my head just enough to avoid his hand without making it obvious.

This weekend was Elara’s birthday.

Her needs had always come before mine.

”There’s no need for the nursery anymore. Just drive. I’m tired.”

We were halfway home when his phone rang.

A sharp, urgent ringtone rang out—her custom ringtone.

My stomach twisted, and I frowned before I could stop myself.

For the past six months, that ringtone had haunted me like a curse.

It had gone off in our house day and night, over and over, until I could barely breathe from the noise of it.

Elara was like some overgrown child who needed Corvin for everything.

A power outage, thunder outside, or even a delivery guy glancing at her a second too long was enough to make her whimper, cry, and beg him to come keep her company.

It was such a pathetic little routine.

And yet Corvin lapped it up every single time.

I had cried and screamed so many times, begging him not to go.

But all he ever did was look at me coldly and say, ”Be sweet, Lyra. Elara’s different from you. She’s soft. She’s sensitive. She scares easily.”

He had forgotten that this so-called young she-wolf was six years older than I was.

Elara’s sobbing came clearly through the phone.

”Corvin, I wanted to make a welcome-home dinner for Lyra tomorrow, but I’m so stupid. I accidentally cut my hand while prepping the ingredients.”

”Don’t cry. I’m on my way,” he said instantly, his voice turning anxious at once.

”You should still take Lyra home. I’ll be fine by myself. It’s just… there’s so much blood, and I’m scared.”

The second he heard the word blood, he slammed on the brakes.

My body lurched forward with the force of it, and pain shot through my wounds so sharply that I clenched my teeth.

He was already turning the car around before he seemed to remember I was still there.

”Lyra, maybe you could…”

”Go ahead; I’ll take a taxi back myself.”

I didn’t even wait for him to finish as I opened the door and stepped out.

Then I walked to the side of the road and raised a hand for a cab like none of it mattered.

He looked at me several times, like he wanted to say something.

But when Elara’s crying came through the phone again, he hit the gas and sped away without another word.
