I didn’t go back to the hotel.

Instead, I called a few real estate agents and went to see apartments.

Over the next three days, I looked at a lot of places.

Nothing felt right.

Either the rent was too high, or the roommate situation was off.

One agent mentioned a unit in my old building-

the owner was moving to a house and renting it out cheap.

When I stepped out of the elevator, I realized it was Knox’s place.

The agent rang the bell.

Knox opened the door.

His gaze landed on me, and he didn’t look surprised at all.

“Sorry. I’m not renting.” I turned to leave.

He stopped me. “Chloe. Let’s talk.”

He gave the agent a look. She got the hint.

“I’ll leave you two to talk.”

I stopped. “Knox, what do you want to talk about?”

“Come in.” He opened the door wider.

I sat on the couch. He got straight to the point.

“You need a place, right?”

“I’m moving to a house. You can have this apartment.”

I shook my head.

“No, thanks. I’ll find a one-bedroom somewhere else.”

He clarified. “No rent. Just keep an eye on the place.”

“No, Knox.” I held my ground.

“Thank you for the cheap rent before, but I don’t want to take advantage.”

He just looked at me.

I was torn.

I should tell him the truth-

that Serena was after his money, and I’d helped her.

I could give the money back.

I’d saved enough over the past six months.

I’d have to pay Serena back the two grand, but I’d still have enough to get by.

But he and Serena had already crossed that line, hadn’t they?

Was this even the right time?

Just as I hesitated, the doorbell rang.

Knox opened it.

I heard Mr. Ashford’s voice.

“Mr. Sterling, a small token of appreciation. Please accept it.”

Knox didn’t take it. “No need.”

Then Serena’s voice, soft and coaxing. “Knox…”

The way she said his name―intimate.

Like they were close.

His back was to me, but I could feel the tension rolling off him.

Serena peered through the gap and saw me on the couch.

Her face twisted.

“Chloe? What are you doing here?”

The branch manager’s eyes went cold.

“Chloe. I recall bank policy forbids private contact with clients. Explain yourself.”

Before I could speak-

Knox cut in, voice flat. “Chloe and I knew each other long before this.”

“It’s not a client relationship.”

Serena and her father froze.

Knox didn’t stop.

“Since you’re so concerned about policy-what exactly are you doing here?”

Mr. Ashford forced a smile. “Well, you and Serena-”

Knox cut him off.

“Mr. Ashford. If you’re not leaving, I’ll have to file a complaint with headquarters.”

“Of course, of course. We’ll go.”

They left. But not before Mr. Ashford shot me a warning look.

I made up my mind. “Knox—”

He spoke at the same time. “Have you thought about the apartment?”

“Actually-”

He must’ve thought I was still deciding.

“You can’t stay in a hotel forever.”

“I’m moving out tomorrow. The code’s the same. You can move back in.”

My momentum stalled.

If you hesitate before saying something, maybe it’s not the right time.

I swallowed the words and let the thought go.

Short term, I wasn’t going to find anything better.

I considered it.

“What if I pay you two thousand a month?”

He agreed so fast I almost thought he’d say it before I finished.

“Deal.”
