Knox was only in the manager’s office for ten minutes before he came out.

He glanced at me on his way past.

Serena returned to her desk.

There were no clients at the moment. Two colleagues gathered around.

“Serena, is Sterling really transferring that much out? What did your dad say?”

I guessed Mr. Ashford was throwing out every incentive-

higher interest rates, better terms-to keep him.

If Knox actually moved that money to another bank, the branch’s yearly performance would take a

massive hit.

Serena shot me a sideways look.

“Someone probably said something wrong. My dad’s still negotiating.”

Sure enough, my desk phone rang. Mr. Ashford wanted to see me.

I went to his office.

He was visibly upset.

He asked if I’d hinted at something I shouldn’t have said something off.

Serena must’ve said something to him.

He assumed I was the problem.

But I hadn’t said anything inappropriate.

I had no idea why Knox suddenly wanted to move his money.

Still-something else was on my mind.

I studied asset management.

I’d been top of my class.

If Knox’s money was managed right, it could grow fast. Bank interest, however high, didn’t

compare.

Then again, with that much money, he could live off the interest alone for the rest of his life without breaking a sweat.

Last night’s homework was:

Given one hundred million dollars, how would you structure asset management?

The perfect case study just walked into my bank.

I’d work on it tonight.

Serena pulled the security footage and analyzed my entire interaction with Knox frame by frame.

At the end of the day, I clocked out.

Serena blocked my way.

“Chloe. What did Knox mean by what he asked?”

“You don’t have a boyfriend, do you?”

“And why did he ask about being blocked?”

“Do you have other accounts connected to him?”

“Have you met in person? You knew he was Fade?”

“Did you tell him the truth?”

She didn’t know I’d been living with Knox for a year.

I never shared my personal life with coworkers.

She’d assumed my connection with Knox was online only.

I kept it brief. “Serena, I do know Knox.”

“I didn’t know he was Fade. I do now.”

“I haven’t told him about the arrangement.”

“He’s your boyfriend now-you’d be better off asking him directly.”

She pressed harder. “How did you meet him?”

“Six months ago. He came into the branch once. You weren’t here that day.”

So I’d been right.

She’d seen his balance and decided to go after him.

“Serena, I don’t owe you answers.’

I clocked out and left.

“Work’s over.” I walked away.

Her eyes stayed on my back-

fingernails digging into her palm.
