Lucas dumped me in the freezer.
The cold seeped into my bones. My lips turned blue, and I couldn’t stop trembling.
Apparently, that still was not enough for him.
He had someone dump a bucket of cold water over me.
My body stiffened as I curled up on the floor.
I was so cold I could barely stay conscious.
“Rhys, I’m really sorry. I just can’t risk you ruining Claire’s surgery. You’ll have to stay here for a little while.
“And I felt awful thinking you might get lonely, so I brought you some company.”
He had someone carry in a box.
“These are some of the most venomous snakes from Sumirca. Their venom can make a person die in screaming agony.
“Please be careful, Rhys. I’d feel terrible if one bit you.”
Then he dumped the snakes onto the floor.
Dozens of them twisted around one another and slowly began moving through the freezing room.
“Have fun.”
He laughed and shut the freezer door.
I could only watch it close.
The heat from my body drew the snakes toward me.
Before long, they were sliding across the floor in my direction.
When I felt something cold touch my hand, I shut my eyes in despair.
The next day, Claire livestreamed the surgery to build publicity around Lucas.
He stood in the middle of a crowd, soaking up everyone’s attention.
“Ms. Bennett really knows how to spot talent. Dr. Hayes is a genius!”
“They look so good together. Why didn’t Ms. Bennett marry Dr. Hayes in the first place? I heard they were childhood sweethearts.”
“And her husband’s face was disfigured, right? People say he looks terrifying now.”
Lucas read the live comments and smiled proudly.
Three hours later, he wheeled Claire out of the operating room.
With everyone watching, she gripped the arms of her wheelchair and slowly stood.
Soon, the whole room was praising Lucas like he was some kind of medical genius.
Claire looked so moved she was almost in tears. Then, with everyone watching, she promised Lucas a five million reward.
“Claire, I don’t want the money. I only want one thing.
“I just want the chance to be with you openly. I don’t want to hide us anymore.”
Claire looked him with shining eyes.
“Okay. Yes. Of course.”
Lucas smiled and handed her the signed divorce agreement.
Then his smile froze.
