My Wife’s Cruel Secret and My Sister’s Death Chapter 02

My Wife’s Cruel Secret and My Sister’s Death Chapter 02 Burned Marriage Papers
When I got home, I put the divorce papers I had prepared on the table.
Claire came home just then.
She saw my suitcase and immediately frowned.
“Rhys, how old are you? Running away from home now? Seriously?”
My face stayed cold, and that clearly pissed her off.
“I’m talking to you. Why the hell are you acting mute?”
She gave a sharp laugh.
Then she noticed the papers on the table and froze.
“You want a divorce? Just because I couldn’t catch Seren’s killers?”
I still did not answer.
She sighed.
“I really did everything I could for Seren.”
Even now, she was still acting.
I had no energy left to play along.
“Don’t explain. Just sign it.”
She picked up the agreement, set it on fire, and dropped it at my feet.
“I’m seriously getting tired of this. Just apologize, and I’ll let the whole thing go.”
Claire had that same cold look she always wore at the negotiating table.
Nobody ever managed to get one over on her.
She always came out on top.
Our relationship had been the same way. She made the rules. I followed them.
Sometimes, I had felt less like her husband and more like an employee who reported to her.
Claire noticed my expression and spoke first.
“I know losing Seren has been hard on you. Once I’m done with work, I’ll take you on a little trip. Maybe that’ll help you feel better.”
For Claire, that counted as giving in.
Before I could think about it, news broke that Lucas had been promoted to department chief.
He had used Seren’s surgical plan to become the youngest department chief at Westbridge Medical Center.
I shook with rage.
I would not let the man who killed Seren steal her life’s work too.
I gathered Seren’s handwritten notes and surgical videos.
Then I organized everything into a file and submitted it to the hospital president as evidence.
The door slammed open a moment later.
Lucas walked in and pushed the file back toward me with a smug smile.
“Claire took care of everything a long time ago.
“Rhys, I’m telling you, there’s really no point fighting this anymore.
“Seren is already gone. If she knew I was using her work to help more patients, I’m sure she’d be proud of me.”
I glared at him through red eyes, my voice sharp with rage.
“You think Seren would be happy that the man who killed her stole her work?”
His pupils tightened.
For one second, something vicious flashed across his face.
“So what if I did it? As long as Claire is on my side, you will never beat me.”
Then he lit the papers on fire.
The flames spread across the table in seconds.
I saw Seren’s work turning to ash.
I ignored the pain and tried to beat the fire out with my bare hands.
Smoke filled the room.
Then Lucas’s weak, trembling voice floated through it.
“Claire, please don’t blame Rhys. He didn’t mean it. It’s my fault. I was selfish. I never should’ve pushed him this far.”
Claire rushed in and grabbed his burned hand, devastated.
She ignored the blisters covering both of mine and screamed at me.
“Rhys, have you lost your mind? I told Lucas to do it! He saved my life. What’s wrong with making him department chief to thank him?”
I stared at her in shock.
“Are you kidding me? Seren saved you!”
