Ethan moved fast.

That same night, he broke up with Vanessa and demanded that she return every cent and every gift he had given her over the past year.

If she refused, she would be hearing from his lawyers.

The problem was, Vanessa had already spent a large portion of the money.

When she asked Sophia and Claire for help, the three of them got into a huge fight in the apartment.

Vanessa even threatened them.

Claire had once logged into her own chat account on Vanessa’s computer, and Vanessa had saved the contact information for Claire’s online boyfriend.

If the other two refused to help her, she would expose all of their secrets at once.

I had no idea what agreement they eventually reached.

All I knew was that more than half the designer bags in Sophia’s and Claire’s closets quickly disappeared.

It was obvious that neither Sophia nor Claire considered Vanessa part of their group anymore.

When I returned to our on-campus apartment, it was so quiet that no one seemed willing to speak.

Vanessa sat alone on one side of the room while Sophia and Claire completely ignored her.

And this was only the beginning.

I pretended not to notice anything and went straight back to my own space.

Sophia soon walked over and pulled me into the hallway.

Unable to hide her curiosity, she asked, “My aunt just told me your mother’s hospital bill has been paid in full.”

She paused and lowered her voice.

“Did you go see Mr. Harris this morning?”

Harris was the wealthy middle-aged businessman who had offered to pay me in exchange for my long-term companionship.

He was also the man Sophia had personally introduced to me.

Sophia’s aunt worked as a nurse at Harborview Medical Center.

Somehow, she had found out about my family’s situation. She pretended to care and set up the arrangement herself.

I looked at Sophia’s expectant expression and shook my head.

“No. Someone lent me the money, so I was able to cover the bill for now.”

Sophia clearly didn’t believe me.

“Who would lend you that much money so easily?”

“Even if it was a loan, you’ll still have to pay it back eventually.”

She started going on about how rich Harris was and how generous he could be with young women, trying to convince me to contact him.

I cut her off.

One of the most effective ways to stop someone from giving you unwanted advice was to ask them for money.

“Sophia, your boyfriend has given you so much jewelry, and he sends you spending money every week. Could you lend me some of it?”

Just as expected, she immediately fell silent.

A few seconds later, she hesitantly claimed that she had already spent almost all of her money.

For once, she wasn’t lying.

Most of the money she received from her online boyfriend had gone toward beauty treatments, clothes, and high-end skincare.

Before I could press her any further, she hurriedly turned around and went back into the apartment.

When I followed her inside, I happened to hear Claire murmur in relief, “Thank God ‘Sunshine’ has never asked to meet me.”

Too bad she had no idea that trouble was about to find her anyway.
