My Superpower Was Hearing Lies And My Weakness Was Believing Him Chapter 04

Nathan sent Vanessa away.

He’d found out the truth. The shop damage had nothing to do with me. Just a couple of local thugs with a bad case of food poisoning.

He looked at me with guilt. “Emily, I’m sorry. I lost my temper.”

I stared at him like he was a stranger.

Twenty years of love was erased by a few tears from another woman.

“Emily, I’m in a difficult spot. Just give me a little more time, please.” He held my hand, refusing to let go even as I tried to pull away.

I lowered my eyes and laughed bitterly.

Nathan was the best liar I’d ever known. He said all the right things, but every move he made was a betrayal.

“Nathan,” I asked quietly, “will you lie to me again?”

He shook his head desperately. “No. Never again.”

The bell rang. My heart was already numb.

Even that final promise was a lie.

This love, cheap and sickening, had trapped me for too long, and cost me everything.

That night, new photos arrived from the investigator.

The two of them walking along the shore, collecting seashells. Doing everything we used to do. Looking happier than we ever had.

I typed back one word: [Stop.]

I had more than enough. Enough to file for divorce. Enough to see the truth.

As I packed my things, I found a tiny pair of baby socks. I’d knitted them in secret after I first found out I was pregnant.

Back then, my heart was full of joy. I used to imagine Nathan finding them one day, how surprised and happy he’d be.

But things had turned out differently.

The door burst open, and Nathan’s security team swarmed in. They dragged me out and rushed me to the hospital. The little socks fell to the floor, forgotten.

Nathan stood outside the operating room, frantic and pale. “Emily, Vanessa’s baby has a congenital liver deficiency. The transplant registry shows you’re the only perfect match.”

“So?” My voice cracked. “You want me to save your love child? You want part of my liver?”

He gripped my hand. “It’s just a small section. There may be some side effects, but the baby is innocent. Please don’t be so cruel.”

Cruel. The word cut through me like shards of glass.

Her baby was innocent. But what about mine?

My child was supposed to have a loving home and two devoted parents. Instead, it was gone, lost in a hospital room, alone.

Wasn’t my child innocent too?

I bit my lip until I tasted blood. “No.”

“Emily!” He shouted my name, as if steeling himself for something. “I saved your life once. Now please, save his.”

I felt something snap inside me.

“What did you say?”

He closed his eyes. “This is the last time.”

Last time. He’d said that countless times. The bell in my head had haunted me night after night.

I let out a hollow laugh. “Fine. But after the surgery, you have to promise me one thing.”

He froze, then broke into relief. “Emily, anything. Whatever you want.”

This time, the bell didn’t ring. But I no longer cared.

As they wheeled me into the OR, Nathan still held my hand. “Emily, trust me, okay? I’ll explain everything.”

I looked at him calmly. “Okay. And don’t forget what you promised me.”

It was the first and last lie I ever told him.

After the surgery, I would divorce him and disappear forever.

Nathan stood there, exhaling with relief. And then, a bell rang inside his head.

[Ding.]
