My Superpower Was Hearing Lies And My Weakness Was Believing Him Chapter 02

At breakfast, the cinnamon rolls sat right in front of me. They used to be my favorite. Now the smell alone made me nauseous.

“Emily, what’s wrong? Not hungry?” Nathan leaned over, worried, as I gagged.

He had always been like this. So attentive. So good.

When my parents died and I wanted to end it all, he saved me. He brought me into his home.

After we married, he loved me in ways that felt limitless.

He always removed the bones from my fish. Every drink was brought to me at the perfect temperature. My favorite foods were placed nearest to me.

We had been so happy. And I’d finally gotten the child I’d dreamed of.

I closed my eyes and squeezed his hand. “Nathan, I’m tired of those rolls. The bakery is out of the way. Why don’t you just come home early instead?”

He laughed softly and pulled me into a warm embrace. “Okay. If they make you sick, I won’t get them anymore. And I’ll try to cut back on overtime. I’ll be home with you more.”

The bell rang. My blood ran cold.

His sweet words were laced with poison, and I was swallowing every drop.

I wanted to scream at him. Curse him. Break something.

But what was the point?

His phone buzzed again. He glanced at it, kissed my forehead, and left without another word of comfort.

The door slammed shut, and I laughed bitterly.

Time to let go.

At the hospital, harsh fluorescent lights stung my reddened eyes.

Before the anesthesia took hold, the doctor asked the usual question. “Ms. Hart, the embryo is developing well. Are you sure about this?”

“Yes.”

My voice was calm, but tears slipped down my cheeks.

I would bear this pain alone. My child deserved better, real parents who truly loved each other.

When I walked out, I felt hollow inside. It didn’t hurt much physically, but emotionally, I felt like part of me was gone.

Dazed, I wandered down the street and saw two familiar figures.

Nathan was helping Vanessa Price walk, his movements so tender. “Careful now. Thank God the baby’s fine. I told you, you don’t need to keep running that bakery. I can take care of you.”

Vanessa squeezed his hand. “Nathan, you’ve already given me so much. I’m not with you for money. I fell for you the first time you walked in.”

Nathan’s eyes flickered, and then our gazes met.

His face went pale. “Emily? What are you doing here?”

I stared at their intertwined fingers, and at the matching wedding bands on both of them. My ring. Our ring.

I lifted my hand, looking at the identical band on my own finger, and gave a bitter smile. “Congratulations.”

Nathan panicked and chased after me. “Emily, let me explain!”

Vanessa looked at me, tears streaming down her face. “Ms. Hart, the doctors said if I lose this baby, I’ll never be able to have another one. I know this is selfish. I don’t want to break up your family.”

She gave Nathan one long look, then turned and walked off, unsteady on her feet.

Nathan’s hand tightened on mine, but he forced himself not to look back.

I watched him stare after her, hollow-eyed, and laughed at myself.

He had always been so observant, yet he never asked why I was at that hospital. He didn’t see how pale I was, how I swayed on my feet.

Because his heart was already somewhere else, with someone more important.
