My Superpower Was Hearing Lies And My Weakness Was Believing Him Chapter 03

“Nathan, if you ever hurt Emily again, I swear I’ll make your life a living hell!”

Margaret Cole looked furious as she turned on her son.

I sat motionless on the couch, listening to him apologize over and over.

“Emily, that night I was drunk. She got pregnant by accident. And her health was fragile… I just couldn’t bring myself to…”

Margaret grabbed my hand, her voice softening. “Emily, you two grew up together. After your parents passed, I raised you like my own daughter. Please, give him one more chance. I’m begging you.”

I saw the guilt in her eyes, and it only made me sadder.

When I lost my parents, Nathan’s family took me in and raised me like their own.

In my darkest days, they gave me warmth and shelter. But I never imagined we’d one day be bound by gratitude and a sense of duty.

“Okay.” My voice came out hoarse. Inside, I already felt nothing.

Nathan’s face lit up. He rushed over and pulled me into a tight embrace, his voice breaking. “Thank you, Emily. I swear I’ll cut her off completely. No more lies.”

The bell rang. I felt nothing but a strange, quiet calm.

After a while, pain just turns into numbness.

Nathan went back to his old ways, coming home early, spending time with me.

He planted wisteria in the yard, saying that when it bloomed, I could smell it from the terrace.

I looked down. “I’m allergic to wisteria.”

He froze, then guiltily tossed the saplings aside. “I’m sorry. I’ll have them replaced.”

“Don’t bother.” I turned and walked inside.

This place wouldn’t be mine for much longer.

He followed, about to say something, when his phone started ringing.

He hung up. It rang again. He silenced it. Again. His face grew tight.

I walked over and pressed the answer button.

“Nathan! Help!” Vanessa’s voice came through the speaker, frantic. “They’re smashing up my shop! Please, someone—”

Nathan’s expression crumbled. He looked at me, eyes red. “Emily, this is the last time. She’s pregnant and alone. If something happens to her…”

“Go.” I said it flatly.

He didn’t hesitate. He was out the door before I could blink.

I smiled bitterly. Love is blind, I should have known.

He was always so careful, but he didn’t even think to call the police. He just ran to her like a reckless boy.

Just like he used to run to me.

I never expected Nathan to bring Vanessa home. He once said this house was only for us.

He held her arm, guiding her gently. When he saw me, his eyes were cold with accusation.

“Emily, I didn’t think you’d go after a pregnant woman. You smashed her shop, how is she supposed to live now?”

My lips were white. “I didn’t do it.”

We’d known each other for twenty years. He knew me better than anyone. But right now, he’d already chosen her.

Vanessa tugged at his sleeve, voice trembling. “Nathan, it’s my fault.”

“Ms. Hart, I know you had me investigated. I know today was just a warning. Please, just let me go. I’ll take my baby and disappear.”

I couldn’t hold back my anger anymore. “Vanessa, you know what a 911 call is, right? If you want to play the victim, at least—”

A blow hit my face so hard my ears rang.

Vanessa’s eyes were triumphant, but her voice was pitiful. “I’m sorry. I’m just so scared for my baby. I had to call him.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened. “Emily, you’ve never been a mother. You can’t understand how she feels.”

Those words cut deeper than any slap could.

I lifted my head, and the despair in my eyes made him flinch.

“Nathan, you really don’t believe me?”

“No.”

“Fine. Blame me. But the child is innocent.”

The silence that followed said everything, and nothing. Whatever we’d had, it died right there.
