My Son Called Her Mom So I Named My Price Chapter 05

Adrian froze where he stood and nearly dropped his phone.

His lips trembled as he asked, “What did you say?”

“Clara has acute cardiomyopathy? How is that possible?”

A loud ringing filled his ears. In a daze, Adrian suddenly remembered the last time he had seen Clara, when she had seemed reckless and desperate.

By the time he came back to himself, he had already rushed into his car.

After running five red lights in a row, Adrian stumbled into the hospital.

He grabbed the front-desk computer and typed in Clara’s name.

When he saw the dense rows of medical records on the screen, Adrian could no longer hold himself up.

He collapsed to the floor, hollow-eyed and dazed.

“Clara really has cardiomyopathy?”

He did not dare imagine it. During the entire month he had spent preparing for the wedding with Vanessa, Clara had been alone in the hospital, fighting her illness by herself.

In the past, she had been so afraid of pain that even a routine blood draw during a physical made her cling to him and ask him to cover her

eyes before she could bear it.

Now, even after her cardiomyopathy had flared up, she had not said a single word.

“Did this patient have surgery afterward?”

His eyes red, he grabbed the nurse at the reception desk.

The nurse was frightened by the look on his face and shook her head in terror.

“If there’s no record, then she didn’t.”

His assistant arrived soon after.

Adrian staggered to his feet and ordered through gritted teeth, “Check the security footage, and check the medical records from every hospital nearby. Find out where Clara is now. Hurry!”

He pulled out his phone again and kept calling Clara.

Not a single call went through.

Adrian felt more helpless than he had ever felt in his life.

In a panic, he opened WhatsApp, only to find Vanessa’s chat pinned at the top.

He scrolled down for a long time before he finally found Clara’s conversation.

The message history was filled entirely with transfer records.

The last one had been from a month ago.

It was the $100,000 he had sent Clara to compensate her for her mother’s bracelet.

Clara had never accepted it, and the money had been returned.

Regret surged through Adrian’s heart like a tidal wave.

With trembling hands, he typed a message.

Adrian: [Clara, where are you?]

Adrian: [Are you okay right now? Did you have the surgery afterward? Is your condition under control?]

After sending several messages in a row, Adrian closed his eyes and sent Clara a voice note.

Adrian: [Clara, I’m sorry. That day was my fault. I shouldn’t have said you were faking it.]

Adrian: [Please tell me where you are, okay? Your health matters most. I’ll find the best doctors to treat you right now.]

Adrian: [Once you recover, I’ll make it up to you. I promise.]

While waiting for his assistant to search, Adrian went home.

He had not been home in almost a month. During that time, he had been so busy preparing for the wedding that his head was spinning.

Vanessa had always found one excuse after another to keep him with

her.

Ryan had also kept pestering him, wanting to stay with Vanessa.

Adrian had wanted to use this chance to teach Clara a lesson for her temper.

He never imagined it would lead to this.

What if Clara had already finished the surgery and was recovering at home?

Clinging to that faint hope, Adrian prepared a large bouquet of Clara’s favorite blush garden roses.

Then he shoved the front door open.

“Clara!”

But there was no one inside.

Adrian hurried into the bedroom, trying to find any trace of her.

The primary bedroom was just as empty. There was hardly anything inside that belonged to Clara.

Adrian panicked and was just about to go back out to search for her when he noticed that the suitcase Clara often used was still sitting untouched in the corner.

She had not moved out.

Only then did Adrian belatedly realize something.

Clara had never had many belongings to begin with.

He hurriedly pulled open the closet. All of Clara’s clothes for every season of the year put together took up only one corner.

They did not even take up as much space as his ties.

On the vanity, the makeup and skincare products she used most would barely fill a palm-sized pouch.

How could this be?

He had clearly told his assistant every holiday to prepare the latest seasonal releases from popular brands as gifts for Clara.

Whenever he was out and saw clothes or jewelry that seemed right for her, he remembered to buy them and bring them home.

Where had all those things gone?

Just as he was thinking, he heard movement at the door.
