My Sister Wanted The God, I Got The Beast In Bed Chapter 09

My Sister Wanted The God, I Got The Beast In Bed Chapter 09

No lightning. No blood. Just peach blossoms drifting through the courtyard, and the quiet sound of Julian slipping out of bed at midnight to tuck the blankets around the children.

As it turned out, the world beyond the Divine Gates was nothing like Valerie had imagined.

Word came down from the Divine Realm by way of divine messenger birds – the newly ascended lord wasn’t doing well.

He’d arrived reeking of a tainted soul and unpaid blood debts, and the old divine houses wanted

nothing to do with him.

To claw his way to power, he’d turned Valerie – his so-called Divine Queen conduit. Her blood by day. Her soul by night.

– into a living magic

Trapped in a torment that wouldn’t let her live, and wouldn’t let her die, Valerie must have replayed

it a thousand times — that moment she’d forced her way forward and chosen Gideon.

Three years slipped away in the blink of an eye.

The peach trees in the vale grew tall, and the noise in the courtyard multiplied by eight.

“Dad! Five ate my frog again!”

“That was a toad! And I didn’t eat it – I only licked it!”

“Daaad, I want sweet radishes! I don’t wanna eat meat!”

Eight children, none of them taller than my hip, were busy dismantling the courtyard. Some dangled from the trees by their serpent tails. Others tumbled through the mud, rabbit ears flopping.

Julian stood in the middle of it wearing a stained apron, a wooden spoon in one hand, his serpent tail snapping out every few seconds to fish the seventh child out of a water barrel.

“Don’t worry, don’t worry – roasted frog for the oldest

roasted frog for the oldest – wait, toad – and meat stew with sweet radishes for the youngest. Everyone gets some!”

– the noise, the mess, the Smoke from the hearth stung my eyes, but the warmth beneath it all chaos – that was the kind of warmth that could make you cry if you held still long enough.

I lay back in the rocking chair, lazily waving a woven fan.

The sun was perfect — the kind of warmth that sank through skin and muscle and settled into your

bones.

Julian finished making the rounds and sidled over, a white porcelain bowl cupped in his hands. He had a smudge of soot on his cheek, and he was grinning so wide his eyes nearly disappeared.

“Chilled honeyed peaches, darling. I took all the pits out.”

I took a bite straight from the bowl in his hands. Cool, sweet, and perfectly ripe.

I looked at him – this beautiful man who spent his days lost in kitchen smoke and baby chaos

without a single complaint — and a soft warmth filled my chest.

“Julian.”

“What’s wrong? Did it scald you?” He was already leaning in, ready to blow on it.

I shook my head and reached up to wipe the soot from his cheek.

“It’s nothing. I just… this is really good. All of this.”

Julian blinked, and then his hand closed around mine. He pressed my palm against his and smiled.

“Yeah,” he said. “It really is.”

“Turns out being mortal beats being a god.”

I looked out at the courtyard — all those wild, noisy, impossible children

– – and then back at this

foolish serpent of mine, whose eyes held nothing but me.

Valerie never understood, not even at the end. The road to godhood was made for the heartless –

cold to the top, dark to the core, and paved with the lives of everyone foolish enough to stand too

close.

But here, in the mortal world, every time I turned around, there was always a fire burning in the hearth. There was always someone waiting.

All I wanted was this – this small home, this ridiculous husband, this litter of children who would probably make us both lose our minds before they were grown.

I just wanted to be a happy, ordinary rabbit. And this a

all of this – was more than enough.
