By the time Callum and I reached the airport, the snow had finally stopped.

The wind was bitterly cold.

He reached over and adjusted my scarf, his voice gentle. “Are you tired?”

I shook my head.

It was well below freezing, but I felt warm inside.

When we left Hollow Creek last night, I figured we were in for a long trip.

He’d been calling me nonstop, and whoever was on the other end clearly needed him bad.

Even so, he changed his plans and took me to a nearby town so we could rest.

The next day, he even gave me a decent wedding.

“Sable, I don’t want you to feel like you had to settle for anything less.”

When the ring slid onto my finger, it didn’t feel real.

“Callum, what if you regret this someday?”

Callum and I had actually been college classmates.

We worked on a few group projects together.

He was quiet and distant, so I figured we were just classmates.

Once the projects ended, I thought I’d never see him again.

Then, my senior year, he told me he liked me.

But by then, I was already with Blaise.

After I went back to Hollow Creek, I pretended not to know him whenever we ran into each other. I

didn’t want any trouble.

Later, he moved to the city, but he still messaged me every holiday.

Back then, I thought he was being stubborn, so I never took it seriously.

I never expected that I’d actually end up with him.

Callum looked down at the ring on my finger, his face serious.

“Sable, I started designing this ring the year you graduated.”

“I used to think I’d never get the chance to put it on your finger.”

“But now that you’re wearing it, I’m never letting you go again.”

He paused, then spoke carefully, “I just hope this isn’t just impulse.”

I shook my head.

“The moment I came looking for you, I knew I wouldn’t regret it.”

“I just need some time.”

Callum understood.

He leaned down and kissed my cheek, soft and restrained.

“Sable, I don’t care how long it takes. I’ll wait.”

His eyes were warm and sincere. My ears went red.

After we settled abroad, I learned that Callum’s parents had moved there years ago.

They were warm and open-minded. When they learned what I had been through, they felt nothing

but sympathy for me.

They never brought it up. Instead, they showed they cared in all the little ways they looked after me.

Day by day, life went on.

Just when I thought I’d spend the rest of my life this happy, Blaise showed up.

I hadn’t seen him in a long time. The energy he used to have was gone. He looked worn out.

“Sable, have you been okay?”

He looked so beaten down, it was hard to believe this was the same guy.

When his eyes landed on my ring, he flinched.

“That ring isn’t real, is it?”

“Sable, we’ve been together for seven years. We loved each other so much. How could you just

marry someone else?”

He pulled a divorce decree out of his pocket.

“I kept my word. Maris and I are divorced. Please, just give me another chance.”

I looked at him without feeling a thing.

“Don’t bother. We ended a long time ago.”

“No, we didn’t!”

Blaise grabbed my hand in a panic.

“Sable, you can’t do this to me! You said you’d marry me. How can you go back on your word?”

“I’m the one who went back on my word?”

I pulled my hand back.

“Blaise, how can you stand there and play the victim? When you lied to me, did you ever think about

your promises?”

“What, you divorced Maris, so I’m supposed to forgive you?”

“You really think you’re that important!”
