I had never even raised my voice at Reid, let alone slapped him. I had always been the gentle, compliant girlfriend. 

Reid was stunned. It took a long moment for the fury to pool 

in his eyes. 

“Ella Miller. You better have a damn good explanation for 

that.” 

My palm was burning and numb, but looking at the red mark on his face, I felt a rush of pure catharsis. 

“Yesterday, your girlfriend lost her tournament because of Lexi Watson. Instead of standing up for me, you held her hand and walked away.” 

“I slapped you for being a blind idiot who bullies his own girlfriend for the sake of a stranger.” 

“Now,” I added, “we’re even.” 

The news of the slap spread through campus like wildfire. 

My reputation at college hadn’t been great. People called me a “simp“, a “gold–digger“, and “pathetic“. 

They only said that because no matter how badly Reid treated 

me, I never left. 

Now that they heard I’d slapped him, the gossip circles were placing bets on how I’d try to beg for his forgiveness this time. 

But I didn’t care about the rumors. 

With the tournament gone, the prize money was gone too. I spent all my time working UberEats Courier shifts to scrape together tuition and living expenses for next semester. 

One night, after finishing my last delivery, I was exhausted and aching when my phone rang. It was Reid. 

He rarely called unless he wanted something. 

“You left your crap at my place,” his lazy voice drawled. “Pick 

it up immediately, or I’m tossing it. It’s polluting my air.” 

I was used to his coldness. “What is it?” I asked tiredly. 

“That trashy ring of yours,” he said. “Thirty minutes, Ella. Then it’s in the garbage.” 

The memory of the ring hit me like a physical blow. 

Custom Engraved Bands had been a trend during our sophomore year. I didn’t have much money, but I wanted to give him something special. 

I dragged him to a DIY Jewelry shop on a Wednesday 

afternoon. 

He’d complained the whole time about how cheap the place was, but when the bands were finished, he put his on just like I 

did. 

I remembered feeling so happy. I’d checked to make sure I 

wasn’t filthy before wrapping my arms around his neck. 

“Do you like it?” 

He’d scoffed. “No. It’s ugly as hell.” 

But he had never taken it off. Not once. 

Last night, when I took mine off, I’d stared at the faint tan line 

it left on my finger before finally letting it go. 

“Are you deaf?” 

Reid’s voice snapped me back to reality. 

“I don’t want the ring anymore,” I said. “Throw it away.”
