My Husband’s Mistress Is My Sister Chapter 09

My Husband’s Mistress Is My Sister Chapter 09

Grace woke up three days after the surgery.

Ethan had been at her bedside the whole time. The moment her eyes opened, he was on his feet. “Grace,

you’re awake. How are you feeling?”

She blinked at him, her hands curling into fists under the blanket.

After a moment, she shook her head. “Who are you?”

Ethan went still.

Hope surged through him.

He’d spent every sleepless hour rehearsing apologies, explanations, plans for how he’d win her back.

It never crossed his mind that she might wake up with no memory at all.

He could start over.

He forced himself to stay calm. “I’m your husband. We got our marriage license last week. The

wedding’s at the end of the month.”

He paused. “You were looking at the stars from the roof the other night and fell. You’ve been out for a

few days. You need to rest. We can do the wedding when you’re feeling better.”

Grace’s lips twitched, just for a second. Then the expression vanished.

She looked at him with wide, innocent eyes. “You say we’re married, but where’s the proof? Where’s the

certificate?”

Ethan felt a spike of panic.

He had no idea where it was.

The day they’d gotten it, Grace had held both copies against her chest like they were precious.

Then he’d pushed her out of the car.

The licenses had been in her bag.

When Grace saw the look on his face, she pulled back, pouting. “You’re a liar.” She called for a security guard to throw him out.

Ethan held up his hands. “I’m not lying. The certificate is at home. I’ll go get it right now.”

He left the hospital and drove straight to the house.

He searched every room. Every drawer. Every corner.

Nothing.

He drove to the intersection where he’d left her.

He hadn’t realized until now how remote it was. A run-down crossroads, miles from anything.

He went through every trash can, every pile of debris along the side of the road. A homeless man watching him muttered, “What’s wrong with people these days? Last week a girl was rolling around in the rain. Now a guy in a suit’s digging through garbage.”

Ethan’s chest seized.

He couldn’t let himself think about what that night must have been like for her.

He kept searching. When he still couldn’t find it, he called in a favor with someone who managed the local dump.

Hours later, he found their marriage certificate.

The bright red booklets were filthy, stained, reeking of rot.

It looked like what their marriage had already become.

Pretty on the outside. Rotten underneath.
