My Husband’s Heir Cost Him His Own Daughter Chapter 55

After that day, I never saw Carter again.

Claire grew, day by day.

She was a bright, beautiful child, like the first crocus of a Boston spring.

On her fifth birthday, she wore a little white dress and played a Chopin nocturne for our guests, her small fingers moving confidently over the keys.

The sunlight in the garden was perfect.

My parents, our family and friends, all gathered to sing her happy birthday.

“Claire, who gets the first slice of cake?” my mother asked, smiling as she held her.

“The first slice is for Mommy.” Claire took the plate and walked solemnly over to me. “Mommy worked the hardest to raise me. I love Mommy the most.”

Looking at that small piece of cake, my eyes grew hot.

I reached out and stroked her soft, golden hair.

“Thank you, my little angel.”

My father smiled. “And what is our birthday girl’s wish this year?”

Claire tilted her head back, her smile radiant.

“The same as always. I wish for Mommy to be happy every day, and I wish she would find me a daddy soon!”

My hand, holding the cake knife, paused.

“Claire, do you really want a daddy?”

“I want Mommy to be happy.” She threw herself into my arms, her small hands wrapping around my neck. “Mommy, I want lots of people to love you.”
