My Husband’s Heir Cost Him His Own Daughter Chapter 56

My nose stung, and I fought back tears.

Over the years, it wasn’t that I lacked for suitors.

But for Claire’s sake, I had never accepted anyone’s advances.

I had always believed that I could give her everything she needed on my own.

It was only much later that I learned that, from a window that was always dark on the second floor of the house across the street, Carter had been watching this very scene.

And he had been watching for five years.

I also heard that on that day, his private lawyer had been standing behind him and had asked quietly, “Sir, for five years, you’ve flown from Charleston to Boston every month, just to watch them from a distance. Have you ever thought about going over? It’s been five years. Perhaps Ms. Lowell doesn’t hate you anymore.”

Carter had just shaken his head and smiled faintly.

There was no bitterness in his smile, only a quiet, resigned acceptance.

“She hates me,” he had said. “I don’t expect her to forgive me. I don’t expect her to come back. Being able to watch them like this… it’s enough.”

The lawyer probably didn’t understand, but he nodded anyway.

“I believe one day, Madam will forgive you.”

Carter didn’t answer.

I think we both knew that forgiveness no longer mattered.

The only two wishes he had left were probably these:

That I would be happy.

That Claire would be happy.

As for himself…

He would spend a very long time living with the consequences of his own actions.
