My Husband’s Heir Cost Him His Own Daughter Chapter 54

Just then, a patrol car pulled up to the curb.

Two police officers got out, their hands resting near their holsters, and walked toward the gate.

“Sir,” one of them said, his tone firm but polite, “this is a private residence. Ms. Lowell has filed for a restraining order. If you do not leave the premises, we will be forced to arrest you for harassment.”

I didn’t say another word.

Everything that needed to be said had been said.

I turned and walked back toward the house.

After a few steps, Claire let out a sudden cry.

“Waaah—”

I stopped and looked down at her.

“Claire, do you think Mommy did the wrong thing?” I whispered. “Do you think I should forgive him?”

As I spoke, her crying subsided.

She looked up at me, her toothless mouth breaking into a wide, happy smile.

My eyes burned.

“Good girl, Claire.” I kissed her soft cheek. “So young, and you already know how to take care of your mommy.”

I held her tight and walked into the house, my back straight.

“Don’t you worry. Even without a father, Mommy will make sure you have the best life.”

Outside the gate, Carter stood frozen for a long, long time.

He stood under the Boston sun for four hours.

He only left when his private lawyer arrived and half-dragged, half-supported him into a waiting car.

Later, I heard he bought a ticket on the next flight back to Charleston.

As if he had finally decided to exit my world as quickly as possible.
