Carter refused to move.

He knew Amelia’s bedroom was on the second floor, facing the gate.

The humiliation, combined with a fear so intense it bordered on madness, made him abandon all pretense of dignity.

He tilted his head back and shouted toward the closed window.

“Amelia! Amelia, it’s me, Carter! Please, just come down and see me!”

“I know I was wrong! I was a bastard! I was blind! I’ve already gotten rid of Savannah! I swear I’ll never see her again! I’ve cleared out everything—her, the child, all of it!”

“Amelia, please. Give me five minutes. Just five minutes. Let’s talk!”

Inside, Mr. Lowell’s face had turned a dangerous shade of red.

He grabbed a golf club from the corner and started for the door.

“I told him if he ever showed his face here again, I’d break his legs. Today’s the day!”

“Darling, don’t!” Mrs. Lowell grabbed his arm. “Let’s see what Amelia wants to do first.”

I walked out of the nursery and stood by the window.

Through the thick, soundproof glass, the disheveled man on the street below looked almost pathetic.
