Leaning against the window, he watched the city shrink below him, a single thought repeating in his mind.

He had to get Amelia to forgive him.

By the time Carter’s car pulled up outside the Lowell estate, it was afternoon.

He hadn’t rested. He hadn’t checked into a hotel. He had come straight here.

“Sir, can I help you?”

A middle-aged man in a butler’s uniform approached the car, his expression wary.

He was a new butler. He didn’t recognize Carter.

Carter tugged at his wrinkled tie, trying to appear less disheveled.

“I’m Amelia’s husband. I’m here to see her.”

The butler looked him up and down. After a moment of recognition, his polite wariness sharpened into open contempt.

“Ah. So you’re our young lady’s ex-husband.”

The words “ex-husband” were a knife to the heart.

Even the butler looked at him with disgust.

“I’m sorry.” The butler gestured toward the gate. “Our young lady is recovering and is not seeing any guests. Please leave.”
