He leaned his head back against the seat, a wave of helplessness washing over him.

“Take me to the hospital.”

He reached the door to her room but paused before pushing it open, hearing voices inside.

A strange woman’s voice, sharp with complaint.

Another woman chimed in. “Seriously. You almost died. Is Carter really worth it?”

She lowered her voice slightly, but it was still loud enough for Carter to hear.

“You don’t even have depression. Did you really have to take it that far?”

Outside the door, Carter went rigid.
