My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 12

“Mom, have you lost your mind? Did you forget everything I told you last night? Are you senile?”

Kevin confronted Margaret in the hallway through clenched teeth.

Amelia hid behind him, gripping his arm.

“I haven’t even started on you, and you have the nerve to question me?” Margaret snapped.

“I don’t care how desperately in love you think you are with this woman. If you insist on divorcing Alison, you leave alone.”

“The house and children stay with us. I’ll live with Alison.”

Margaret wrapped her arm tightly around mine.

What mother could stand by and watch her biological child grow up with a stranger?

I couldn’t bear it.

Margaret could bear it even less.

She had become my weapon, pointing wherever I aimed and firing all by herself.

Kevin tightened his jaw but said nothing.

The hearing resumed.

The judge ordered that the children remain in my primary physical custody while the divorce, parentage, and financial investigations continued.

Kevin received supervised visitation.

The court also froze the assets he had transferred to Amelia and ordered both parties to provide complete financial records.

Months passed.

Kevin did not request DNA testing. Doing so would have risked exposing his own years of neglect, complicated the adoption record, and undermined the image of devoted fatherhood he had built for

the court.

Because he had signed both children’s legal parentage documents and had supported them for

years, his attorneys warned him that biology would not automatically erase his obligations.

Eventually, faced with the recording, the hidden transfers, the affair, and the risk of sanctions for attempting to manipulate testimony, Kevin agreed to settle.

I received the house and primary legal and physical custody.

Kevin retained limited visitation and remained responsible for child support unless the court later

modified the order.

The remaining marital estate was divided after the forensic accountants traced the missing assets.

The floating comments exploded.

[Wait, what just happened?]

[Amelia only wanted to become a mother. Alison can still have more children!]

[Has anyone else noticed something strange between Alison and her brother-in-law?]

At last, the comments had developed a brain.

“Alison, I don’t know what kind of spell you put on my mother, but don’t celebrate yet.

Kevin held Amelia against him and looked at me with disgust.

“Without me, you’ll burn through that money soon enough. Don’t come begging me to take the children when you can’t afford them.”

“Kevin, let’s go,” Amelia said. “I don’t want to watch you talk to her.”

“All right. Let me say something to my brother, and then we’ll leave.”

Kevin soothed Amelia before dragging Dylan, who had remained silent throughout the proceedings, into a corner.

Less than a minute later, Kevin’s roar shook the hallway.

“What do you mean? I transferred the money to you. Now you’re denying it?”

“Denying what?” Dylan asked. “I kept records of every transfer.”

“Once I realized you were hiding marital property, I turned the records over to Alison’s attorney.”

Kevin’s face changed.

Dylan continued calmly.

“The money is going back into the marital estate. If you were going to lose it anyway, it made more

sense to make sure Alison and the children received their lawful share.”

“You and Mom have both lost your minds.” Kevin slammed his fist against the wall.

“I’m your older brother. We’re the family.”

Dylan looked at him without expression.

“Alison, Mom, Nason, Lilly, and I are the family.”
