Hunter’s eyes lit up. He walked toward me and pulled me into a tight hug.

He kissed my forehead, and his voice shook slightly. “Stella, I’ve been waiting for you to say that.”

I breathed a quiet sigh of relief. He was so easy to win over. One sentence, and he dropped all his defenses.

Did that mean no divorce?

[Don’t believe her! She’s lying!]

[She doesn’t love you. She’s only saying sweet things because she wants your money.]

[That woman of yours is right outside.]

[Can you please not fall for her act?]

Hunter held me for a moment, then pulled out his phone to call Liam. “Liam, you can head back. My wife and I…”

My phone buzzed with a message. I pulled away from him and checked it.

Julian: [Stella, I think the plant compounds from that flower I found on the cliff might be able to neutralize the Thornvine’s effects. But it’s wilting fast. I need your help.]

A picture was attached.

I got excited. I immediately said to Hunter, “Hunter, I have to go to The Ridge. I won’t be back tonight. Talk later.”

Hunter was still on the phone with Liam. He stopped mid-sentence. He grabbed my hand and said gently, “Can you not go today?”

If I didn’t go today, the flower would die. The research would stop.

Julian had risked his life finding that flower on a cliff. We only had one.

Flowers bloom and die. If the research stalled, we might never find another one. Bringing wilted plants back to life had always been my specialty.

The lab needed me. I had to go.

“It’s really important.” I pushed his hand away and asked seriously, “Didn’t you say you’d always support my career?”

Hunter’s gaze turned intense. “More important than me?”

I tried to placate him. “I’m sorry. I really don’t have time to waste.”

I figured I’d make it up to him when I got back. More than usual. Until he was satisfied.

But Hunter picked up the divorce agreement and handed it to me.

He said, with clear disappointment, “Stella, if you insist on leaving right now, sign the papers first.”
