My Husband Wanted a Divorce. The Comments Told Me Why Chapter 04

I opened my eyes and looked at Hunter. His expression was grim. It seemed like he’d already made up his mind.

Thanks to the comments, I wasn’t that surprised.

I rubbed my eyes and said calmly, “Can we talk about this tomorrow?”

The disappointment on Hunter’s face deepened.

“Fine.” He got up and headed for the study.

The comments exploded.

[Unbelievable. This ice queen has no heart.]

[Hunter is trying to talk about divorce, and she says tomorrow?]

[That attitude practically screams that she doesn’t care at all.]

[She might as well tattoo “I Don’t Care” on her forehead.]

[Hunter must be completely crushed now.]

[He only married her to repay a debt. He never loved her.]

[After the divorce, he can finally be satisfied with the female lead.]

[Honestly, the sooner he gets out, the better.]

The comments were twisting my words. I did care.

The night before, I’d been working late in the lab doing experiments.

I didn’t get back to the bungalow until six in the morning. I’d only slept four hours before my lab colleague, Julian Cross, called and woke me up.

We were researching this special vine. The blood of anyone pricked by its thorns turned light blue. They’d get burning hot, like they’d taken a powerful stimulant.

It was addictive too. People pricked by it would want to keep using the thorns on themselves.

After multiple pricks, it could cause genetic mutations. We called it Thornvine.

We didn’t know how many people had been pricked by Thornvine. Our lab’s current project was to extract the vine’s active compounds and develop an antidote.

Julian said over the phone that he’d made an important discovery. So I got up, went to the lab, and dove straight into the work.

I didn’t stop until six p.m., when I drove back to the Cole estate.

I ate, then spent the evening in my study, looking up data and reading papers.

It was a miracle I’d managed to stay awake through that hour in the bathroom. Right now, nothing could get between me and sleep.

[Fine, fine. You’re so virtuous. So cold.]

[Career first, he gets whatever’s left, right?]

[To be fair, Stella being dedicated to her work is a good thing.]

[But Hunter needs someone who can give him emotional support.]

[So they’re just not compatible. Marriage was forced. They’re both exhausted.]

[Hunter has had enough of being ignored and neglected.]

[He’s already drafting the divorce agreement in his study right now.]

[Stella can just go live in her lab forever.]

I dreamed about doing experiments. I was just about to find the antidote when the lab door slowly opened.

Hunter’s personal bodyguard walked in and slapped a seal on the door. “Mrs. Cole, Mr. Cole is taking back this land. The lab is being sealed. He’s giving you three days to move out.”

Then the dream changed.

I was grabbing Hunter’s arm. “Please, Hunter, can we not get divorced? Please don’t take away the lab?”

In the dream, Hunter shoved the divorce papers toward me and said coldly, “No.”
