My Husband Tried to Give His Fortune to His Secret Son, But He Forgot Our Prenup Chapter 05

After saying that, I put the knife away.

Skyler was still staring at me in shock when the hospital doors were suddenly shoved open. Madeline came rushing in on high heels and threw herself into Skyler’s arms, her eyes full of concern.

“Skyler, are you okay? I heard you collapsed, so I came as soon as I could.”

“What did the doctor say? When are you having surgery?”

Lucas walked in right behind her, took Skyler’s hand, and spoke through a choked voice. “Dad, you’re going to

be okay.”

I watched the scene with an amused smile.

Skyler had collapsed yesterday, and the news had been all over social media last night. Yet neither of them

had come until now.

And somehow, they’d arrived just in time for the reading of the will.

How interesting.

The attending physician stepped forward and sighed.

“Mrs. Hayes, Mr. Hayes’s condition is one medicine still has very limited options for. Surgery isn’t likely to offer much benefit. At this point, there’s nothing we can do.”

Tears immediately streamed down Madeline’s face. “Skyler, don’t leave us!”

“Don’t be afraid.” Skyler hugged her back and gently patted her shoulders. “I’ve already made my will. I’m leaving the company and my assets to Lucas. You two will have everything you need for the rest of your

lives.”

Madeline’s face lit up, but she quickly hid it and spoke with feigned concern. “Skyler, if you’re leaving everything to us, won’t Vivian be angry?”

Skyler’s expression stiffened. Then he quickly regained his composure and said, “They’re my assets. I can

leave them to whoever I want.”

“The company needs a capable man as its heir. Too bad she had a daughter. All these years, I’ve provided for Vivian and her daughter. I’ve done more than enough for them.”

His mother nodded. “Exactly. What did she expect when all she gave the family was a daughter? Wendy doesn’t even have the Hayes name, so why should she get anything?”

Then she took Madeline’s hand and comforted her. “Madeline, don’t worry. You’re the only woman I’ll ever recognize as my daughter-in-law. The Carters? They mean nothing to us.”

Madeline lowered her head shyly. Then she turned toward me and spoke in a soft, fragile voice.

“Then… thank you for letting us have it, Vivian. The Carter family estate can stay with you, and I won’t bother

you.”

Lucas stepped forward too. “Dad, don’t worry. Once I take over the company, I’ll work hard and make sure

everything you built lives on.”

Skyler looked at him proudly. “That’s my boy.”

I watched them divide up my family’s fortune as if they were doing me a favor and couldn’t help laughing as I

slowly applauded.

The sound echoed sharply through the silent hospital room.

Skyler looked at me. Apparently, he thought I was unhappy about the way he’d divided the assets, his face

tightening with impatience.

“Vivian, I’ve made up my mind. Don’t make a scene. Otherwise, whether you get to keep that estate is another

question.”

I looked at him and smiled. “Skyler, before you made that will, did you bother checking what assets you

actually owned?”

The attorney’s face changed instantly.

“What are you talking about?” Skyler looked confused.

“You signed a prenuptial agreement. Remember?” I stared straight at him and spoke slowly. “It gave you management authority over the Carter Group, nothing more.”

“And your annual salary was one dollar. After thirty years, that comes to thirty dollars. So where exactly did you get all these assets you’re so generously giving away?”
