Cecilia must’ve sensed the disaster unfolding because she lunged to snatch the diary away. After all, my

mom had been taking care of her like a servant for years.

“Aunt Miriam, don’t do this. It doesn’t matter what he felt-what matters is what he did. He stayed with you all

these years, didn’t he? Just let it go.”

The second the words left her mouth, a brutal slap cracked across her face. It sounded like it stung.

Mom’s eyes were bloodshot. “God damn it! I neglected my own daughter for over a decade just for you! So

many times I saw you pulling your stunts, and I looked the other way.”

My nails dug deep into my palms. So she knew. The whole time. And I thought she was just a fool caught in

the web.

Cecilia’s head snapped to the side. It took her a long moment to recover. “Aunt Miriam, how could you hit

me? It’s me-Cecilia! I’m the one who makes you proud. Your star. Remember?”

Mom froze like a statue, then buried her face in her hands and wailed. “I was so wrong! I thought you were

so gorgeous, so sweet.”

“I felt so sorry for you-my sister’s little girl, all alone. So I gave you everything. I took from my own daughter

to give to you. And you used it to destroy her. The thumbtacks, the stairs-I believed every lie.”

She slapped herself too. The crack echoed. Miriam staggered toward me, her soul completely shattered.

“Sage, Mom’s awake now. From now on, I’ll only love you.”

I flinched and stepped back like she was something I didn’t want touching me. “Aunt Miriam, honestly, don’t

bother. Let’s just stay strangers from now on.”

Then I pointed at the reporters sneaking shots outside. “You all saw that. Some parents don’t deserve the

title. They’ll disown their own flesh and blood for someone else’s kid.”

The day the tabloids ran that story, Gavin finally tracked me down. He knelt outside my door, begging me to

open up.

“Sage, it’s been a month. Can we just talk face to face?”

I opened the door. He was a disaster-exhausted, pale stubble covering his jaw. He clearly hadn’t taken care

of himself in weeks.

He admitted he was dead wrong. He shouldn’t have trusted Cecilia. He hated my parents for making him.

“I’ll blacklist her everywhere. I’ll completely destroy her.”

I kept eating my takeout and shrugged. “Not my problem. When are you signing?”

Gavin looked gutted. Every day for the past week, he’d wired me 5.2 million dollars. Unconditional. A gift, he

called it.

“I just find it exhausting. Why not settle it in one clean cut? I don’t want your shares. I just want the cash.”

He stared at me with something unreadable flickering in his eyes.

“I made one mistake, Sage. One. But I never touched her. I never kissed her. And you’re gonna end our marriage over that?”

I finished the last bite. “From the moment you hid your little connection with Cecilia from me, you should’ve seen this coming.”

Love doesn’t split itself three ways. No amount of pretty excuses can whitewash everything he poured into her.

He knew every hell I’d lived through, and he still chose to believe those people.

I met his gaze with total calm. “What we had was real and deep. But once certain lines are crossed, there’s no going back.”
