My Husband Saved My Cousin Instead of Me Chapter 16

My Husband Saved My Cousin Instead of Me Chapter 16

Gavin wouldn’t loosen his grip. And neither would my mom. When she found out I’d moved into a new place

at Ashford Tower, she’d stand around downstairs holding a thermos, waiting.

“Sage, Mom made your favorite fish soup.”

Cecilia hated the smell of fish. I hadn’t tasted it in forever. But I refused.

“Aunt Miriam, you raised me, but my soon-to-be-ex-husband gave you plenty of cash. We’re square.”

“Sage, Mom regrets everything. I listened to your father’s poison and treated Cecilia like a princess.”

“From now on, you’re my only daughter. Please, let me make it up to you. Please?”

No. Someone stabs you, then offers you candy and says sorry. Does that heal the wound? Not a chance.

Mom sobbed. “Do I have to die before you’ll call me Mom again? Just once?”

I tilted my head, honestly confused. “You let Cecilia call you Mom for years. You loved that, didn’t you? You

loved it so much you couldn’t even wire me my tuition. People who take too much always pay for it in the

end.”

I’d long passed the age of begging for a mother’s love. No matter how much was offered now, I didn’t want

an ounce of it.

I never imagined I’d see the day Cecilia showed up in front of me like a stray dog in the rain.

She’d shed her glamorous gowns. The flawless makeup Mom used to apply was gone.

She rushed at me, begging for mercy. “Sage, for the love of God, tell your husband to back off!”

“He called me a homewrecker and dug up piles of proof that you were telling the truth the whole time.”

“He didn’t just blacklist me everywhere. Every platform. Gone. And after telling the whole world I was his

wife, now he’s saying I made it all up. That I was delusional. That I forced him.”

I smiled faintly. “Of course I dug up the proof. I’m the one who sent Gavin the marriage certificate.” He’d

taken the initiative to post it everywhere, claiming he only played along because my parents begged him.

He somehow found doctors from St. Agnes Psychiatric Hospital to have Cecilia committed. He called her a

lunatic who did nothing but slander and seduce men, and said she could rot inside those walls for the rest of

her life.

Dylan turned out to be the unexpected knockout punch. He’d finally discovered that his parents had begged

him to send money for his sister’s treatment, and Cecilia had deleted every single message.

So he went public with everything-every dirty detail of her life overseas. Then he backed it up with hard evidence. Proof that every single accusation she’d ever made against me was a lie.

Her reputation imploded. People pelted her with garbage in the streets. And my dad-still trying to play the hero-ate the wrong bowl of mushroom soup. Toxic. His body shut down.

By the time they got him to the ICU, my mom was just sitting there. Staring at nothing.
